The NBA’s version of the Ming Dynasty is done. After helping pro basketball gain a foothold in the world’s most populous market, Chinese star Yao Ming has retired.
Yao made it official Wednesday, telling a news conference that a series of foot and leg injuries forced him to end his playing career at the age of 30.
“I will formally end my career,” said Yao, who became a household name in China before starting his NBA career with the Houston Rockets in 2002. Yao played eight seasons in the NBA.
“Today is an important day for me and holds a special meaning for both my basketball career and my future,” Yao said. “I had to leave the court since I suffered a stress fracture (断裂) in my left foot for the third time at the end of last year. My past six months were a painful wait. I have been thinking about my future over and over. Today I am announcing a personal decision, ending my career as a basketball player and officially retire. But one door is closing and another one is opening.”
Yao said he would return to work with his former Chinese team, the Shanghai Sharks, with the possibility of becoming general manager. He already owns the club and wants to contribute more.
“My playing career started with the club. I hope I can do something for it,” Yao said.
He later appeared with his family on the stage to the applause and cheers of the crowd. He thanked a lot of people ---- his family, former coaches, even players like Shaquille O’Neal ---- “for making me a better player. I will be always with you. Thank you.”
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was among those attending the farewell (告别) conference Wednesday. Morey made the long trip from Houston. Morey said 20 hours on planes was tiring but he would be sorry if he wasn’t here. “It’s a big moment,” Morey added. “Yao had a sense of humor, a great attitude and sense of responsibility. I hope we can continue his culture in the NBA.”

Yao had played six years with the Chinese national team before joining the Rockets, and was already a star in his home country. There is an English saying, “Laughter is best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment, doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
65. Doctors have proved the following except that ______. A. smiling does good to health. B. laughter can be tolerated.
- 6 -
C. there is a way to reduce pain.
D. laughter can work the muscles in the feet. 66. The main idea of the passage is ______.
A. laughter and physical exercises have similar effects on the human body. B. smile can produce the same effects as laughter. C. pain can be reduced by laughter. D. laugher is the best medicine.
67. The students who ______ tolerated the pain for the longest time.
A. listened to different radio programs B. could produce a kind of chemical C. don’t have stress of pain D. listened to a funny program 68. The underlined word “diminish” is similar to ______. A. test B. stop C. reduce D. increase

What do working mothers worry about the most? It’s the kids of course. Whatever the setting, the question I get asked the most is “Will the kids be alright?” It’s made me realize that we tend to look at the glass half-empty rather than half-filled when it comes to blending work and family. We forget about all the benefits that we bring to our children when we work ---- and I’m not talking about the obvious financial benefits, although these of course shouldn’t be taken for granted.
About a year ago I remember getting a call from the school just as I was pulling up to the house after having driven 20 minutes to the school and 20 minutes back. “Mrs. Brown Quinn, your son asked us to call. He forgot his sports clothes. Can you come back to the school and drop them off?” I was exasperated (恼火)! I had already spent 40 minutes in aggressive weekday morning traffic. I replied, “Sorry, I’m working at the moment. I’m afraid my son needs to learn to be organized.”
Being a good parent requires delivering tough love sometimes. Kids need to learn to be independent. It can be a cruel and competitive world out there. Pursuing interests, including business, outside of your kids, can give you that extra perspective that you need not overwhelm your kids with attention. This benefit of working isn’t always immediately evident.
It wasn’t until our daughter went away to college that she realized why we had raised her in the way that we did. “Mom, I can’t believe how so many of my friends struggle to manage things on their own. They are constantly calling their parents for help.” You’ll love that moment! After all those years of complaining about why you don’t do this or why you don’t give them that, your kids realize that tough love has made them better people.
69. The author refused to drop off her son’s sports clothes because ______. A. she was caught in heavy traffic B. she was busy working C. she thought her son was lying D. she wanted her son to be organized 70. How can kids become better people according to the author? A. By giving them all your attention
B. By giving them freedom to do things on their own C. By showing them your deep love D. By giving them tough love
71. The daughter’s attitude towards the author is ______ when she grows up.
- 7 -
A. complaining B. caring C. understanding D. disappointed 72. The purpose of the author is to ______. A. analyze a special benefit of working B. advise us to blend work and family C. argue for working mothers
D. describe her own experience in raising children
D
Online games, social-networking Web sites, and chat rooms are empowering and motivating for teens and help with their development. When adults look at teens today, they think what they are doing is different and seem to be wasting a lot of time. And those activities seem quite foreign. But when we look closely at what kids are doing, it’s not much more different than what their parents did. They are hanging out with their friends, finding romantic partners, and trying to identify themselves.
Today’s teens are being raised with technologies that allow them to have self-directed learning on their own terms, on their own time, and without the restrictions of a classroom setting. This gives the teens a feeling of freedom. This is very different from how kids learn in school when they are handed a set body of knowledge required to master by their teachers.
Teens were motivated to engage online because they were either driven by interest or friendship. And there are some specific findings according to a research:
One major finding is that there is a generation gap in how parents and teens view the teen's online activities. Adults think the activities draw their attention from school work and are left in the dark about what their teens are doing online. Teens, on the other hand, understand the value of the Internet and are motivated to participate.
Another finding shows that teens are not taking full advantage of the Internet. They are using the social networks to chat and post photos and make friends, which are important to their development, but they are not making use of other existing opportunities to learn about astronomy, foreign languages, and other subjects only a few clicks away.
Teens are also improving their social skills online by learning the basic social and technical skills needed to interact in today's digital world.
Pressure from those of the same age also takes on a new role online. Teens are reporting that they are more motivated by those of their age online with public spaces that allow the teens to interact and provide feedback to one another.
While teens are using the Internet for both social and intellectual development, they are also facing significant challenges on how to manage their relationships online. 73. The writer is probably ________. A. a parent B. a teenager C. a teacher D. a researcher
74. Which of the following best describes how the writer thinks about teens and online activities? A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Understandable. D. Concerned. 75. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Internet is a source of learning for teens.
B. Outside classroom learning is equally valuable. C. Teens need to learn more effectively online.
- 8 -
D. Parents should also learn to use Internet.
76. How many specific findings are listed in this passage? A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.

Food sometimes gets poisoned with harmful things. A person who eats such food can get an illness called food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually not serious, but some types are deadly. The signs of food poisoning usually begin within hours of eating the poisoned food. Fever is one of the most common signs.
Certain microorganisms(微生物)cause most types of food poisoning. Bacteria and other microorganisms can poison eggs, meat, vegetables, and many other foods. After entering the body, these tiny living things release(释放)poisons that make people sick.
Some chemicals can also cause food poisoning. They are often added to food while it is being grown, processed, or prepared. For example, many farmers spray chemicals on crops to kill weeds and insects. Some people may have a bad reaction to those chemicals when they eat the crops.
Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people. These include certain kinds of seafood, grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and mushrooms.
When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small. Microorganisms multiply rapidly in dirty places and in warm temperatures. This means that people should never touch food with dirty hands or put food on unwashed surfaces. Food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing. Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganisms. People should also wash food covered with chemicals before eating it. Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild. Some of these foods may contain natural materials that are poisonous to humans. In addition, some types of fish can be poisonous.
Most people recover from food poisoning after a few days of resting and drinking extra water. If people eat natural poisons, they must go to the hospital right away to have their stomachs emptied.
77. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Food when poisoned can make people sick. B. Food poisoning means death.
C. Food poisoning comes in varieties. D. Food poisoning can be serious.
78. We know from the passage that the symptoms of food poisoning . A. are always accompanied by a fever B. are too common to be noted C. can be noticed within hours D. can he ignored
79. Food poisoning can be caused by all the following EXCEPT . A. some chemicals B. low temperatures C. some tiny living things D. certain natural materials 80. From Paragraph 5, we can learn that .
- 9 -
A. mushrooms should not be eaten
B. vegetables are safer than meat and seafood

As you know, there is a tendency that more and more students choose universities in big cities for further study. Recently, our class had a debate over this phenomenon.
Those who prefer large cities mainly want to enjoy the many advantages there. For example, they can get more opportunities, take advantage of the convenient traffic, live more comfortably, and earn more once they get a job there after graduation as the pay is relatively higher in large cities. But there are some others who believe that people should also consider the disadvantages in big cities, such as the fierce competition, heavy traffic, serious pollution and high cost of living.
In my opinion, whether to study in a big city or not depends on various factors, such as your interest, the climate, the living cost, future job hunting. So think before you leap. A wise decision is often the outcome of careful consideration.
