Internet Almost everyone with or without a computer is aware of the latest technological revolution destined to change forever the way in which humans communicate, namely, the Information Superhighway, best exemplified by the ubiquitous Internet. Already, millions of people around the world are linked by computer simply by having a modem and an address on the “Net”, in much the same way that owning a telephone links us to almost anyone who pays a phone bill. In fact,
since the computer connections are made via the phone line, the Internet can be envisaged as a network of visual telephone links. The World Wide Web, an enormous collection of Internet addresses or sites, all of which can be accessed for information, has been mainly responsible for the increase in interest in the Internet in the 1990s. Before the World Wide Web, the “Net” was comparable to an integrated collection of computerized typewriters, but the introduction of the “Web” in 1990 allowed not only text links to be made but also graphs, images and even video. A Web site consists of a “home page”, the first screen of a particular site on the computer to which you are connected, from where access can be headed to other subject related “pages” (or screens)at the site and on thousands of other computers all over the world. This is achieved by a process called “hypertext”. By clicking with a mouse device on various parts of the screen, a person connected to the “Net” can go traveling, or “surfing” through a web of pages to locate whatever information required. Anyone can set up a site, promoting your club, your institution, your company’s products or simply yourself. And what is more, information on the Internet is not owned or controlled by any organization. It is, perhaps, true to say that no one and therefore everyone owns the “Net”. Because of the relative freedom of access to information, the Internet has often been criticized by the media as a potentially hazardous tool in the hands of young computer users. This perception has proved to be largely false however, and the vast majority of users both young and old get connected with the Internet for the dual purposes for which it was intended--discovery and delight.

听力原文: An “early bird” used to be a person who was awake early and began his(or her) day’s work before other people. The people, who said it, were thinking of an old saying: It is the early bird that catches the worm. But since 1965 the Early Bird has had a different meaning. The modem Early Bird is a communications satellite in orbit round the earth. The use of wires to carry telephone communications and for other purposes of the same kind does not satisfy modem needs. We had to use radio. But the radio waves that we use for these purposes--microwaves--travel in straight lines. They do not follow the curve of the earth’s surface. We can send them from one radio station to another—a relay station--where we amplify them and send them do a third station. If there is no relay station within about 50 kilometers to receive the microwaves, they will continue into space. At a certain height, some of them are sent back to earth. A powerful station several hundred kilometers from their starting point can receive them. But these are not good ways of sending the thousands of telephone, radio and television signals across the oceans.
26.
A.A person who is awake early.
B.A bird that catches the worm early in the morning. C.A plane which flies in the morning.
D.A communications satellite in orbit round the earth.

听力原文: Some years ago, an American policeman found a woman lying near a lonely road. She did not appear to have had an accident, but she was trembling and clearly in a state of shock. So he rushed her to the nearest hospital. She began to tell the doctor on duty a story which was astonishing in all respects. She had been driving along a country road when she was stopped by a flying saucer landing in front of her. She had been forced to leave the car and enter into the flying saucer by some creatures. These creatures looked like human beings and could easily make themselves understood although they could not speak. It was as though they could
read her thoughts. They treated her politely and allowed her to leave after carrying out a number of tests on her. As she otherwise seemed to be normal, the doctor decided that she was probably suffering from the side effects of some drug. The woman insisted on being allowed to go home, but when she gave her address, it was in a town over a thousand miles from the hospital. The police then started to make inquiries. They soon discovered that there was already search going on for the woman whose husband had reported that she had disappeared, Her car had been found with the driver’s door open and the engine running. In front of the car, the surface of the road had been completely destroyed, not by any explosion or anything of that kind, but as if a large circular white hot object had burnt through it.

听力原文: As researchers learn more about how children’s intelligence develops, they are increasingly surprised by the power of parents. The power of the school has been replaced by the home. Studies have shown that factors like child’s understanding of language, his learning patterns, and his curiosity are well established before the child enters school at the age of six. Studies have also shown that even after school begins, children’s achievements have been far more influenced by parents than by teachers. This is particularly true about language learning. However, it’s sad to see that so many parents are not making the most of their child’s intelligence. Until recently parents had been intimidated by educators who asked them not to educate their children. But many teachers now realize that children cannot be
educated only at school and parents are being asked to contribute both before and after the child enters school. Parents have been particularly afraid to teach reading at home. Of course, children shouldn’t be pushed to read by their parents, but educators have discovered that reading is best taught individually and the easiest place to do this is at home. Many four-or five-year-old children, who have been shown a few letters and taught their sounds, will spontaneously make up single words of their own with these letters even before they have been taught to read.

听力原文: In a way, all of us are on a spaceship, the planet Earth. We move around the sun at 18 miles per second and never stop. On our spaceship we have six billion people and a limited supply of air, water, and land. These supplies have to be used carefully because we can’t buy new air, water, or land from anywhere else. The environment on our planet is a closed system: nothing new is ever added. Nature recycles its resources. Water, for example, evaporates and rises as visible drops to form clouds. Then the water returns to earth as rain or snow. The rain that falls today is actually the same water that fell on the land 70 million years ago. Today, the Earth is in trouble. Factories pour dirty water into rivers. Many fishes die and the water become unhealthy for people to drink, Cars and factories put poisonous gas into the air and cause plants, animals and people to get sick. People throw bottles and paper out of their car windows, and the roadside becomes covered with all sorts of
wastes. Over the years, people have changed the environment, and at the same time we cause pollution. To continue to survive, we must learn how to use the Earth’s resources wisely. We have to change our habits and stop dumping such enormous amounts of industrial waste into the water and air. We must cooperate with nature and learn better ways to use, not abuse, our environment.

Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to “think and concentrate”. Spilich put young non-smokers, active smokers and smokers deprived (被剥夺)of cigarettes through a series of tests. In the first test, each subject (试验对象)sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96. In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and nonsmokers performed equally well. The
next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one. Nonsmokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine (尼古丁), active smokers were faster than deprived smokers. In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers. The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it. Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details. “As our tests became more complex,” sums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins.” He predicts, “Smokers might perform adequately at many jobs--until they got complicated. A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity.”
62. The purpose of George Spilich’s experiments is ______.
A.to test whether smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokers

64. The word “bested” (Line 3, Para. 5) most probably means ______. A.beat B.envied
C.caught up with D.made the best of

The American common school differed from the European school in that it was from the outset an expression of the desire on the part of the American colonies to develop a type of intellectual freedom not prevalent in Europe. There was a further characteristic of the American common school which distinguished itself from its European predecessors. The school was, from the beginning, controlled by local authority. Communities were indeed compelled by early legislation in the colonies to maintain an educational institution of some kind for the young people, but the details of organization were left to the communities. We find that there was the greatest variety in the method of controlling these schools. In New England the town meeting determined the policy of the school. It set the salary of the teacher, and very frequently went so far as to select the teacher, although it committee. This committee often included the pastor (牧师)of the church and one or more of the leading citizens.
