Some have worried that a message from an advanced society might make us lose faith (1---in) our own, might deprive us of the initiative to make new (2---discoveries) if it seemed that others had made those discoveries (3--- already), or might have other negative consequences. This is rather (4---like) a student dropping out of school (5---because) his teachers and textbooks are more learned than he is. We are free to (6---ignore) an interstellar message if we find it offensive. If we choose (7---not) to respond, there is no way (8---for) the transmitting civilization to determine that its message was received and understood on the tiny distant planet Earth. The translation of a radio (9---message) from the depths of space, about (10---which) we can be as slow and cautious as we wish, seems to pose few dangers to mankind; (11---instead), it holds the greatest promise of (12---both) practical and philosophical benefits.

In particular, it is possible that among the first contents of (13---such) a message may be detailed prescriptions for the avoidance of technological disaster, for a passage through adolescence to (14---maturity). Perhaps the transmissions from advanced civilizations will describe (15---which) pathways of cultural evolution are (16---likely) to lead to the stability and longevity of an intelligent species, and which (17---other) paths lead to stagnation or degeneration or disaster. There is, of course, no guarantee (18---that) such would be the contents of an interstellar message, (19---but) it would be foolhardy to overlook the (20---possibility/ likelihood). Perhaps there are straightforward (21---solutions) , still undiscovered on Earth, to problems of food shortages, population(22---growth/ explosion), energy supplies, dwindling resources, pollution and war.

Perhaps it is not likely, but it is certainly(23---possible) that the future of human civilization(24---depends) on the receipt and decoding of interstellar messages from extraterrestrial civilizations.

If there are a million technical civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy, the average separation from (1. between) civilizations is about 300 light-years. Since a light-year is the distance that light travels in one year (a little under 6 trillion miles), this implication (2. implies) that the one-way transit time for an interstellar communication from (3. the) nearest civilization is some 300 years. The time for a query and a response would be 600 years. This is the reason why interstellar dialogues are much more (4. less) likely ---particularly around the time of first contact--- than interstellar monologues. In (5. At) first sight, it seems remarkably selfless that a civilization might broadcast radio messages with no hope of knowing, at least in the immediate future, (6. whether) they have been received and what the response to it (7. them) might be. But human beings often perform very alike (8. similar) actions as, for example, burying time capsules to be covered by future generations, or even writing books, composing music and create (9. creating) art intended fro posterity. A civilization that had been aided by the receipt of such a message in its past might wish similarly to benefit from (10. 删除) other emerging technical societies.

The Internet—A Blessing or Curse?

Nowadays college students often use the Internet for study, shopping, entertainment, and many other things. Some people say that the Internet facilitates students’ lives, but others worry that it might affect students’ study. In my opinion, the Internet is good for college students when it is used appropriately. First, college students can collect many kinds of information via the Internet. When students find something interesting in the book, but their teacher cannot give them more details or answer all their questions in class, they can search the Internet after class to find the details or answers by themselves. Second, the Internet keeps college students updated with what is happening all over the world. Just by browsing the web-page, students can read a lot of news. They can also type on some key words to search and follow any affair on the Internet. They don’t have to search piles of newspapers and thus save much time for study. In one word, the Internet facilitates students’ lives when it is used reasonably. Now more and more college students are becoming aware of the convenience and the importance of using the Internet.
