The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature. David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.

The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病)and heart disease

Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these same health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on.

And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment. As the world’s population grows, more forests and tropical areas will become farmland for crops

or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now. Mr. Tilman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health, “a dilemma”: a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.

24. According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from________.

A. transportation B. developing countries C. agriculture D. developed countries 25. David Tillman believes that____________.

A. diet, the environment and human health are closely connected. B. the Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializes. C. people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart disease. D. traditional diets are more balanced than the Western diet. 26. We can infer from the passage that_________. A. Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases.

B. overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases. C. the examined information comes from developing countries. D. industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet. 27. The main purpose of the passage is to_________. A. call on us to protect the environment. B. warn us of the danger of the Western diet. C. remind us of the importance of health. D. advise us to have a balanced diet.

C

The house was quiet at 5 am and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring(轻微颤动声) of the freezer had been the sea.

Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples into his schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He’d eat after he’d been through the cave, sitting on the rocks

and staring at the sea. He wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do. What else? Sandwiches---but his mother might wake up if he started pulling out bread for sandwiches, she’d want to know why he had to leave so early. He settled for some biscuits, and left a note stuck to the table:

“Gone to Michael’s. Back tonight, Tim.”

The sky was high and soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn’t up. Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet.

The sand hills still breathed heat from yesterday’s sun, though the top of the sand was cool. He ran down to the beach impatiently, but there was no one, just dry sand dancing in the early wind and seabirds marching up and down watching the waves. The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched (延伸) across the sea. The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world, over the first rocks, along to the point. Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.

He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. He had to force himself to go closer. Why was it so much more mysterious (神秘的) now? But it would be silly to go back now after so much trouble. He needn’t go in all the way. . . 28. What did Tim do at the beginning of the story?

A. He left the house quietly. B. He had breakfast at home. C. He left a note on the freezer. D. He put a sweater in his schoolbag. 29. “He settled for some biscuits” ( in Paragraph 3 ) means that Tim_______. A. had to leave the biscuits on the table B. liked biscuits better than sandwiches

C. had to take biscuits instead of sandwiches D. could only find some biscuits in the kitchen

30. What made it possible for Tim to see the entry to the cave?

A. The height of the first rocks. B. The ups and downs of the waves.

C. The change in the position of the sun. D. The vast stretch of the sunlit beach.

31. In the story, Tim's mood (心情) changed from_________.

A. loneliness to craziness B. anxiousness to excitement

C. helplessness to happiness D. eagerness to nervousness

D

In a world full of information as our own, all of us need to know how to learn well. Yet evidence suggests that most of us don’t use the learning techniques that science has proved the most effective.

The scientific literature(科技文献) evaluating these techniques goes back to decades and across thousands of articles. It’s far too extensive and complex for the average parents, teachers or employers to look through. Fortunately, a team of five leading psychologists have done the job for us.

Professor John Dunlosky and other psychologists closely examined 10 learning strategies and evaluated each from high to low utility(实用) on the basis of the evidence they’ve gathered. Here’s part of their conclusions:

In contrast to familiar practices, the effective learning strategies with the most evidence to support them aren’t well known outside the lab. Take distributed practice, for example. This strategy involves spreading out your study time, rather than engaging in one marathon. Cramming (死记硬背)information at the last minute may allow you to get through that test or meeting, but the material will quickly disappear from your memory. It’s much more effective to look through the material at intervals over time.

And the longer you want to remember the information, whether it’s two weeks or two years, the longer the intervals should be.

The second learning strategy that is highly recommended by Dunlosky is practice testing. Yes, more tests---but they are not for a grade. Research shows that the mere act of calling information to mind strengthens that knowledge and aids in future

retrieval (检索). While practice testing is not a common strategy---despite the strong evidence supporting it ---there is one familiar approach that captures its benefits: using flash cards. And now flash cards can be presented in digital form. Both distributed practice and practice testing were rated as having “high utility” by Dunlosky.

32. How did the psychologists study and rate the learning strategies? A. By analyzing the materials gathered in the past years. B. By asking some students questions about their study. C. By doing some experiments on the objects in the lab. D. By asking parents and teachers to look through the articles. 33. The underlined word “extensive” in Para. 2 means____________. A. small in amount B. easy or quick to do

C. more than is needed D. a wide range of information

34. About distributed practice and practice testing, it’s true that________. A. many students have benefited a lot from them. B. they were first put forward by John Dunlosky. C. only a small number of experts know about them. D. psychologists are not sure whether they are effective.

35. The evidence shows that the strategy of practice testing__________. A. is a way to use flash cards to help study B. is mainly used to help us remember well C. helps know about students’ grades in time D. is a way widely used to strengthen memory 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

First of all, be optimistic. An optimistic way of thinking always helps us even in the most difficult life situations and this one is no exception. There’s nothing in school that can make you scared. Cheer yourself up, and you’ll feel no stress for good. Then, do some sports after class. Not only does proper exercise build up

our body, but also helps improve our mood, which helps you forget about stress and makes you smile instead. Finally, eat healthily. In this way, you can keep energetic and fit. As the saying goes, “ An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Therefore, make sure you add enough fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other healthy food to your meals. Best wishes!

Mike
