三、阅读理解(每题2分,共22分) A

Farming was once the chief way of life in nearly every country. People cannot live without food, and nearly all their food comes from crops and animals raised on farms. Many other materials such as cotton and wool also come from plants and animals raised on farms. Not many people farm for a living any more, but farming remains the most important work in the world at present.

Before the nineteenth century, the typical American family lived on a small farm. They raised pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, and planted corn, beans, fruits, garden vegetables, rice, and wheat. Everyone worked long and hard, but the results were often poor. Families harvested just enough food for themselves. This situation began to change during the last half of the 1800’s and it changed remarkably (明显地) in the following century.

Scientific methods and labor-saving machinery have made farming increasingly productive in the US. The development of improved plant varieties and chemical fertilizers (肥料) has helped double and even triple (三倍) the production of some major crops. More scientific animal care and animal raising have helped increase the amount of meat and other products animals produce. At the same time, the use of tractors and other modern farm equipment has sharply reduced the need for farm labor. As farming has become less important as a way of life in the United States, it has become more important as a source which offers materials to industry. Today’s successful farmers are experts not just in agriculture but also in accounting (会计), marketing and finance (金融). Farms that are not run in a similar way have great difficulty competing.

3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Traditional American farming.

B. The increase in the number of crops in the US. C. Modern farming methods. D. American farmers’ hard work.

Five years ago, I was a mother relying on the government to raise four children on a limited income. Some of my neighbors were also struggling for different family matters. I knew I had the ability to do something, while they also had something to offer. Then I began connecting families so that we could care about others and share things with one another.

In February 2004, we jumped through all the difficulties to become a non-profit (非盈利的) organization —the Family Support Network. It has been a totally volunteer organization since it was founded. There are over 200 families in our network now and we’ve received national attention for our effort. Our volunteers have provided over 10,000 hours of help for their neighbors in need. With the help of four volunteers from Microsoft, we are now looking for volunteers from all around the world who are devoted to caring about others and sharing things with their neighbors. We can reach them either by phone or email.

Our Family Support Network is aimed at ordinary people. People are attracted by our effort. We do not advertise, but we try to share the good news we have as much as possible. I was recognized as a giraffe last year for sticking my neck out to make the world a better place. The Associated Press regarded us as a leader in making society better. John McKnight of Northwest University considered the Family Support Network as a new idea for community (社区) development. We welcome more people to join us. Together we are making a difference to create a better and more caring society for our children’s future.
