But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Because the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. At the equator (赤道) day and night are sometimes the same length. The are each twelve hours long. More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the
highest mountains; some traveled into unknown parts of the world; some sailed small boats across the
largest sea. Now some people begin to look for new excitement.
Bungee jumping (蹦极) and motorcycle racing (摩托车赛) are quite dangerous sports. Bungee
jumping only lasts a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, 200 meters above the
ground, and there is a rubber band (橡胶带子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber
band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.
Why do people join in these dangerous sports? Some scientists say that it is because modern life
has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight but was interesting.

“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that. It
sometimes makes me angry,” said Li Ping, a middle school student in Hunan. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?
One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent, he / she likes worrying things. They worry about everything about you, from the time you were born.
They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry about you. They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. All these things are part of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Phone if you stay somewhere else so that your parents don’t call every hospital in the phone book looking for your body. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Take responsibility (责任) for what you have done. Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help you can give them. Someday, when you become a parent, they may be able to help you know how to get on with your children.

Parents sometimes look so unfriendly because ______.[ ] A. they are older than us B. they worry about almost everything about us C. they have the same problems as we do D. they are often unhappy 2. People also sled for sports and fun. Driving a sled does not need much skill. The driver
gives a kick(踢) in the snow to start the sled. He or she can also ask someone else for help. In a sled, there can be one person or several.
Usually, you have to lie on your back, feet first in a sled. As you travel, you move your body and feet to keep it in the right direction (方向).
There is a special sled called the skeleton sled (骨架雪橇). It's very different. On a skeleton, you lie on your stomach and drive the sled in a head-first way. It is very fast! Many are afraid to ride it. But once they try it they want to do it again! 阅读短文,回答下列问题: 1. What are sleds made of ?

In general, laws for children are a good thing.
One hundred years ago in industrial countries, children worked 18 hours a day in a factory at age seven. The factory owner could beat a child who fell asleep or was not fast enough. Both parents and teachers could do the same.
Today, there are many laws about children all over the world. Some people think children must obey rules or they should be punished, others do not agree. The Inuits or Eskimos in Alaska almost never punish their children. The parents don’t hit them. If the children go too far,the parents punish them by making fun of them.
Children in other parts of the world are not as lucky as Eskimo children. American parents can spank(打……臀部) their children at home, but a teacher cannot hit a child in a public school. This is also true in Germany. In contrast(对比), it is against the law for anyone to hit a child in Sweden. Swedish parents cannot spank their children. The children also have a special government official who works for their rights. There is even a plan for children to divorce from their parents though this is not a law yet!

You may feel worried, upset or disappointed in your life. If you feel so, you’d better do
something about it. Just read the following tips (小建议) to find out some ways to fight depression (抑郁情绪) .
First, try to find out the troubles that have worked on your depression. When you know what has got you to feel blue, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to relax the mind. Ask for help if you need it. Friends and family can help let depression go instead of just watching you hurt.
Second, take a walk for 15 or 30 minutes every day—or dance, or bike if you prefer. If you need to be encouraged, make yourself do exercise anyway. Once you get into the exercise habit, it won’t take long to notice a difference in your mood.
Next, depression can affect a person’s thoughts, making everything seem hopeless. If
depression makes you notice only the bad things, try to notice the good things. There are both good things and bad things in life. The more good things you notice , the less depression you’ll feel. Then, try to do something fun for yourself. For example, you can take time to play with a
friend or a pet. You can do something that you are interested in, such as painting, singing and so on. You can also find something to laugh about—a funny movie, a joke… Perhaps laughing can help cheer you up.
Finally, please remember that depression takes time to heal (治愈). So most of all, don’t forget to be patient with yourself.

Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to
remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding (点头) your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty .
In that country, you shake your head to mean 'yes'— a nod means 'no' . At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeated refilled as soon as you drink up . If you think that you have had enough , you should take the cup or glasses in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.
In Europe it quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble .
