1. Please give me a brief introduction of yourself.

My name is Wang Ming. I am 22 years old now. I am from a beautiful coastal city Dalian. There are four people in my family, my parents, my sister and me. Now I serve as a second officer in a famous shipping company. I work very hard on board. My daily work is keeping a navigation watch when underway at sea and make out the passage plan before voyage, when the ship is at anchor I will keep the anchor watch. During navigating at sea, I am keen on music, reading, fishing and playing chess. I often read navigational publications in English. When our vessel is at a foreign port, I also buy some magazines there and enjoy another kind of culture and art.

Good morning, sir. Let me introduce myself first. My name is… I was born in 1973 in Guangzhou. I am married and now I have a lovely son. I graduated from DaLian Maritime University in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering. Then I have been working on board as an engineer for about 12 years. Now I am a second engineer.

2. Describe the responses when a person falls overboard.

If a person falls overboard, the officer on watch shall sound man-overboard alarm and report to the captain, throw the person overboard a lifebuoy, stop engine, and put the helm hard to the side on which the person falls. Muster all the boatmen of some lifeboats, and get ready for releasing. Start the engine just before the boat touches the water surface. Approach the person from windward.

Rescue the person and return to the ship at once.

3.Please say something about your hometown

My hometown is Dalian. It’s a beautiful city in north China. My hometown is a good port city and famous for its tourism. Every year there are thousands of tourists coming from all parts of the country. They will enjoy the beautiful scenery, the fresh air and the blue sky. The people here are very kind and hospitable. They entertain their guests with delicious local seafood. I like my hometown very much.

4.Describe your job on the ship

E.g.1: I am a cook on the ship. Everyday I will prepare three meals for the captain, officers, crews and other members on the ship. The first thing to do for me is to make the menu for the whole day. Then I must check all the vegetables and meat to make sure that they are clean and fresh enough to eat. The cookers must be washed before being used. I think I am an early bird, because when some people are still in their dreams, I have got up to prepare their breakfast. Maybe some people think my job is tiresome, but I enjoy it very much.

E.g.2: I am fourth engineering on board. I like the life on board. My duty time is 8-12a.m. and 8-12p.m. My main work is to keep all the pipes and pumps in good condition. Sometimes I have to do some repair work such as repairing the air compressor or other pumps’ cylinder. As my experience the most common problem is the cylinder of the pumps. In my spare time, I like listening to the music,

reading books and doing some exercises. That is my life on board.

5.Please give a brief introduction of your chief engineer.

Zhang Dong is our chief engineer. He is Chinese. He graduated from Ji Mei Marine College in 1990. He has worked more than ten years in Guangdong shipping company. He is a skilled engineer. He is in charge of our engine department. We all like to work with him. He not only works hard in the engine room, but also helps others. He sometimes teaches others English. We all learn much from him.
