Reaction Report of Wuthering Heights
“Wuthering Heights” is a book of Emily Bronte, it write in a servant’s eyes-Ellen Dean. This book tells a story about love and hatred from two generations.
The protagonist Heathcliff was a founding who was adopted by Mr. Earnshaw in Liverpoor. After that, Heathcliff lived with Mr. Earnshaw’s family in Wuthering Heights. Mr. Earnshaw had a daughter-Catherine and a son-Hindley. Hindley hated Heathcliff, but Catherine liked him. Since Mr. Earnshaw died, Hindley became the host of the family. He treated Heathcliff as a servant even a peasant. He robbed Heathcliff of education and maltreated Heathcliff. Meanwhile, because of the same interests and characteristic, Catherine and Heathcliff became good friends and fell in love with each other. Catherine was a vain creature. She loved parties and dancing. Her neighbor Linton who lived in Thrushcross Grange can give her all the rich life she wanted. And exactly Linton loved Catherine and showed his love to her. Catherine decided to marry Linton even though she was sure don’t she loved him. That made Heathcliff rather fury, and he lived the family. Catherine missed Heathcliff very much. She knew Heathcliff is more than she is and whatever their souls are made of, his and her mind are the same.
Three years later, Catherine got married with Linton and moved to Thrushcross Grange. They lived a peaceful life. But all things were changed since Heathcliff came back. Heathcliff determined on retaliation. Hindley had bad habit of soak and gamble. Heathcliff bought Wuthering Heights and occupied Hindley’s son-Hareton. Linton had a sister called Isabella, she loved Heathcliff. In order to retaliate Linton, Heathcliff got married with Isabella and used her very ill. Catherine was very sad of Heathcliff’s marriage. She became ill in bed. After delivered a seven-month-baby called Cathy, Catherine passed away. At the same time,
Isabella leaved Heathcliff and deliver a son called Linton. Since Isabella died, little Linton was captured by Heathcliff and lived with Hareton in Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff lured Linton love Cathy, and forced them get married when old Linton was in deep ill. Old Linton died soon. Heathcliff occupied all the inheritance of old Linton and successfully pay him back. Little Linton had a bad health, he also died not very far. Cathy and Hareton went together. Meanwhile, Heathcliff was beleaguered by Catherine’s spirit. He found Catherine in Cathy’s eyes, and don’t want to stop the love between Cathy and Hareton. He was died in depression. All of the resentments between these two generations were disappeared with the died of Heathcliff.
I have read the book twice, and also I have watched this movie. All of things happen between Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange in a small area. I am surprised of the wide imagine about author. How she can write this long novel just in two old houses and several characters. Many people think it is a novel of suspense. However, in my mind, I can see the deepest love and hatred in this story. Young Heathcliff and Catherine love each other, but due to the complex environment, they have to be divided. Maybe the love between them is very pure, because they just attach each other by the same soul and mind. Catherine’s marriage make Heathcliff become so mad, and the love in his mind go hatred. Therefore, Heathcliff use all his life to make a devastating revenge. The effect is fatal. He damages all the love, happiness and lives. But as the winner, Heathcliff also lose his life in Catherine’s love.
I have asked some students who read this book, most of them think Heathcliff is almost a mad ,touchy and furious man even psychopath. They think Catherine meet Heathcliff is her misfortune. Because if Heathcliff never show up, Catherine will live with Linton peacefully and happily. I can’t say their ideas are wrong, because when I first read this book, I also hold the
same opinion to them. I also hate Heathcliff. But when I read it again and watch the movie, I change my opinion. Even if Heathcliff never meet Catherine, Catherine still won’t marry Linton. Because Catherine clearly know she have nothing in common with Linton no matter interests or characteristics. She will fall in love with another Heathcliff who is more herself than she is. Catherine’s love also deep and hot, she fall ill after Heathcliff get married. She choose to stay with Heathcliff in her last life.
I think their love is also the author-Emily dying to get. Because all of the words in this novel express the author’s mind and idea. I don’t think Emily want to criticize Heathcliff., instead she depicts this character is to show her desire of pure love. I think “Wuthering Heights” is not a sad story. In the last several chapters, I can see the new hope and love from little Cathy and Hareton. Heathcliff don’t destroy this love. From this I know Heathcliff ’s spiritual nature is good. Maybe Emily want to show us a really Heathcliff who give up hatred and revenge. Or maybe Emily want our readers to imagine this new love and give us a good hope of this ending.
This book tells me many. It’s an unusual novel I have read. Maybe I can say this writing style is very wide and free. And two major feelings in this book is extreme love and hatred. These two feelings themselves are contradictions, but both of these feelings are described on two person. They extremely love each other, but also extremely hate each other. Sometimes that makes me much confused. Why the author creates two feelings on lovers? And why the author make these lovers are like the same person? It’s hard to understand for me. Maybe this story happens in wilderness, so the plot is covered with mystery and weird.
Literary Europe and America say that “Wuthering Heights” is a magnificent epic of love. Actually, Catherine says” My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff's miseries, and
I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it. My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.” And heathcliff says “The word can be summed up my future death and hell, without her, alive also hell” Catherine can find her shadow on Heathcliff’s hot soul. Heathcliff regard Catherine’s love as his life. If this love is end, life of Heathcliff also will be end. It’s a love from souls. I can’t say it’s the best love I know, but at least, it’s the most powerful love and full of energy. Due to this power, all of the reprisals of Heathcliff can be understand and forgive. It seems that heathcliff hate everyone who are related to Catherine, but on the other side, this hatred and destroy represent the increasing love for Catherine. And that’s why I am not hate Heathcliff. In my terms, all of the descriptions of tortuosity, indignant, atrocity, hatred, and some immoral actions in this story are result from their unforgettable and inflexible love.
