Since I was born and brought up in a rural town, I have a great interest in nature. Using the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go toCanadajust because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there So after I finished the study program, I went toYellowknifein theNorthwest Territories.
I clearly remember the sixth night inYellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 p.m. and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera.
The northern lights were flickering (闪烁) in the sky! I was shocked and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.
Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that I lost all feeling in myhands and feet.
As I took pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they gradually come down to the south part of the sky. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures.
The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger the northern lights flicker in the sky. That’s because they come about from the collisions (碰撞) between atmospheric gases and the solar wind. Much more solar wind comes to the earth when the sun is active, whichleads to the best northern lights. And the color1 s of the northern lights depend on the height of the collisions and the kinds of gases. 4. Why did the host mother ask the author to go out? A. She wanted to take a picture of him. B. She wanted to take a walk with him. C. She wanted to tell him something important. D. She wanted him to see the northern lights.
5. The author forgot to take pictures after going out because ______. A. the host mother didn’t remind him to take the camera
B. he was shocked by the wonderful sight
C. the lights flickering in the sky disappeared too soon D. he lost all feeling in his hands and feet
6. When is the best time to see the northern lights? A. When they appear in the north part of the sky. B. When they come down to the south part of the sky. C. When they are between the north and south. D. When they rise in the east part of the sky. 7. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. Waysto take good pictures.
B. The relationship between the sun and the northern lights. C.The color1 s of the northern lights. D. The time of the best northern lights.

Newspapers in Great Britainvarygreatly in their ways of carrying the news. There are serious papers for those who want to know about important happenings everywhere, both at home and abroad. There are popular newspapers for those who prefer entertainment to information.
The London newspaper that is best known outside Great Britain is probably the Times. It began in 1785, and has a high reputation for believable news and serious opinions on the news. It calls itself an independent paper, which means that it does not give its support to a particular political party. Its leading articles give the opinions of the editors, not those of the owners of the paper.
Letters to the editor are printed in the newspaper. These parts of the Times are always interesting. Most of the letters are serious subjects. But from time to time there will be long letters on the subject which is not at all serious, perhaps on a new fashion of dress, or the bad manners of the young people, compared with manners of thirty years ago.
8. If you want to get pleasure, please buy yourself _________. A. a serious newspaper B. foreign newspaper C. any independent paper D. a popular newspaper 9. The Times has been famous to outside Great Britain for ________ years. A. 19 B. 85 C. 236 D. 229
10. The Times is an independent paper because ________. A. it supports no political parties
B. it is not controlled by the British Government C. it gives special support to all the political parties.
D. the editor’s opinions are not examined by the owners of the paper 11. The underlined word “vary” in the passage probably means “_________”. A. improve B. compete with each other C. are different D. keep in touch with each other
D
When you walk with a backpack, do you know how the things inside move from side to side? Now scientists havefigured out how to tap into that movement to produce electricity.
Picture a pendulum (摆锤) fixed to a backpack frame and stabilized with springs on either side. The pack’s weight is attached to the pendulum, so the pendulum swings side to side as you walk. Then a machine is driven by that swinging movement, and spits out electrical current to charge a battery.
Volunteers carried the pack while walking on a running machine and wore masks to measure the flow of O2and CO2. Walking with the slightly swinging 20-pound load, the device (设备) did not significantly affect the volunteers’ metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the forces of acceleration they’d feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater comfort for a long hike. And the device did produce a steady trickle (涓流) of electricity. If you up the load to 45 pounds, the swing of the pack could fully charge a smart phone only after 12 hours. The details are in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
The device produces electricity from human movement and has been identified as a workable solution to providing a renewable energy source for portable electronic devices. It is particularly useful for those who work in remote areas, as these people often carry a lot of weight in a backpack for their exploration.
But here’s a realconundrum: the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five pounds. The researchers say that’s about four pounds too many to be a smart alternative to batteries. So they hope that more research lets them lighten the load, to ensure the pack charges you up without weighing you down. 12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. How the device works. B. What the device looks like.
C. Who the device is designed for. D. Why scientists designed the device.
13. Which of the following describes the device? A. It greatly affected the volunteers metabolic rate. B. It harvested energy as the volunteers walk. C. It failed to produce steady electricity. D. It was useless for a long walk.
14. What does the underlined word “conundrum” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Problem. B. Method. C. Bond. D. Decision. 15. What will the researchers try to do next? A. Increase the charging speed of their device. B. Find smarter alternatives to batteries. C. Reduce the weight of their device. D. Put their device on the market.

In an effort to stop the pandemic's advance, we may be finding ourselves taking certain precautionary (预防的) measures and maintaining a reasonable degree of social distance. Our habits have had to change to accommodate the reality of coronavirus.___16___
People are advised against touching high-touch surfaces in public places, including elevator buttons, door handles, and especially other people's hands. Consequently, the traditional habit of handshake has been substituted for other gestures, like elbow bump (碰撞)and foot tap, which involve less bodily contact.___17___The foot tap and the elbow bump have a way of feeling vaguely ridiculous, and it's hard to take them entirely seriously, especially in business settings. Centuries of tradition has normalized handshake in our culture, and it may be too deeply rooted in our custom to be abandoned.
___18___In 1996, a sales manager developed an experiment to test the impact of the handshake on strangers. He found that more people told the truth when he introduced himself to them with a handshake before asking the question.\" A handshake, \"he later told The New York Times, \"creates a higher level of trust, a degree of familiarity, within a matter of seconds.\"
With more communication on screen, the handshake is an occasion to reach out and touch one another, to
enjoy a tiny, fleeting connection.___19___And meeting someone face to face, whether a client or a colleague, always suggests a closer level of familiarity than merely touching base online.
As the coronavirus spreads and habits change, it may prove that you can't fist bump or foot tap a handshake either. There's something in human nature that responds to the handshake. It feels good to shake the hand of someone you respect or admire, to have that moment of bonding.___20___When COVID-19 is a distant memory, chances seem good that the handshake will prevail (流行)again. A.The handshake is the first thing to go. B.In a sense it can't be seriously replaced.
C.The handshake is a way of maintaining relationships. D.The real human contact feels all the more precious now. E.The handshake is also a rare gesture of casual closeness. F.These touch-free alternatives are likely to replace the handshake. G.However, adjusting to these new forms of greeting has been difficult.

52.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Mike licked (舔) the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite flavored ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted (拍) him on the back. He'd
taken first place again in his race.
As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.
It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place — and then third — and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him.“Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it's got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it.”Mike reluctantly agreed. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn't sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn't know if he still had any speed in the pool.
