Teaching Procedures Step 1 Listening Learning Focus: Get familiar with the topic of “life experience”. Task 1 This part is designed to build the students‟ ability in listening. All the exercises here are concerned with family. ● Play the recording and check the students‟ answers. ● Play it again, stop after each sentence and ask some students to repeat the sentence. Correct the students‟ pronunciation when necessary. Task 2 This task checks the students‟ ability to figure out key information in long conversation. ● Play the recording. ● Ask some students to tell their choices and check them. Task 3 This part helps improve the students‟ ability in dictation. Ask the students to pay attention to the grammatical coherence in their answers. ● Play the recording. ● Ask some students to write the words which are filled in the blanks on the blackboard. ● Check the answers. Task 4 This part helps the students listen for key information in a passage. Tell the students to read the four choices in advance so that they are better prepared for the question and the passage. It‟s a useful technique when they take a test. Task 5 This task helps the students listen for key information and some of the details in passages. Tell the students to get some information from the incomplete answers to the question before listening, so that they are better prepared for the listening task. Tell them to pay attention to the grammatical

coherence in their answers. Step 2 Topic exploration Are you a victim of life‟s events, choosing to see the negative side no matter what the siutation? Or, do you believe no matter what happens you should think positively and learn from the experience? Some people feel one‟s outlook on life decides its outcome. Read the story and consider for yourself. Step 3 Leading-in (Text A) Group work: (1)The teacher lets the students discuss the questions on page 46: 1. What will you do when something bad happens to you? 2. How do you make your life exciting? 3. Do you always choose to learn from something bad? Give an example. 4. Why do people need to choose a good mood whatever happens to them? After discussion, let some of them present their opinions. Step 4 Word study The teacher lets the students pronounce the new words one by one. If they go wrong, the teacher will correct them. Then explain some words. Step 5 Listening (Text) The teacher lets the students listen to the text and try to read after the tape. Step 6 Homework 1. Read the new words and text after class 2. Underline some words, phrases or sentences that you consider important or difficult.

Teaching Procedures Step 1 Review The teacher begins with the assignment mainly to have a review of the functional and notional language the students picked up in the previous class. Step 2 Spot dictation The following paragraph is taken from Text A. listen carefully and fills in the blanks without referring to the original text. Michael replied: “Each morning I wake 1____ and say to myself, Mike, you have two 2_____today. You can choose to be in a good 3_____ or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time 4______bad happens, I can choose to be a 5______ or choose to see it as a type of learning. I choose to learn from it, to see it almost 6______a victory.” Step 3 Scanning The teacher asks the Ss to scan the text and try and answer the questions on Page 51. Step 4 Skimming The teacher asks the students to read the text and try to identify the structure of this passage. Main idea Part One (Para. 1) Michael is a happy guy. Part Two(Paras. 2-5) A talk with Michael. Part Three(Paras. 6-12) The serious accident. Part Four(Para13) Philosophical Point: Every day we have a choice to live fully. Step 5 Analysis on the important language points. ◆run-of-the-mill 普通的,不突出的 e.g. The president of our school is not a run-of-the-mill person. 我们的校长是个了不起的人物。 The play was a bit run-of-the-mill. 这部戏不够精彩。

Focusing on Sentence Structure Combine the following pairs of sentences after the model, using the word “lest” 1. He lied. He was afraid that he would be punished. He lied lest he (should) be punished. 2. They didn‟t say what was in their minds. They were afraid that it might start trouble. They didn‟t say what was in their minds lest it (should) start trouble. 3. She has no courage to get married. She is afraid that she may lose her job. She has no courage to get married lest she (should) lose her job. Translating A. Translate the following into English. 1. 这事件可能产生的后果(consequence)应予以认真考虑。(reflect on/ upon) The likely consequences of the incident need to be reflected on / upon. 2. 他差点解决了这个问题。(within an inch of„) He was within an inch of solving the problem. 3. 假如你要把财产转让给他人,须使他成为合法产权人(legal owner)(transfer„to) If you want to transfer your property to someone, you should first make him the legal owner of it. 4. 自从公司迁到这个地区以来,已有数十台电脑被盗,公司决定采取措施制止盗窃。(take action) More than ten computers have been stolen since the company moved to this area, so the company decided to take action to stop it.
