My name is Hu Nan, a student majoring in Chemical Engineering from School of Chemical Engineering. I chose professor Yuan to be my tutor who has made outstanding achievements in the areas of distillation simulation and Gas-Liquid mass transfer. And my tutor arranged for me to do some research on diffusion. Diffusion, a kind of mass transfer caused by stochastic motion of molecule, is a slow process widespread in the unit operation of chemical process. When diffusion is involved in reactions, rectifications and absorptions, the rate of the process would be limited by diffusion. The core of my study is to record the diffusion procedure and measure diffusion coefficients of gas with a promising technology called LIF(Laser-induced Fluorescence) which uses the concentration field of quantitative visualization, a newly-developing technique with advantages consisting of high measurement precision, no interferential field and the devices to be easily established. LIF is based on the use of a fluorescent dye in the liquid medium, characterized by its sensitivity to specific parameters like gas concentrations, pH changes. Thanks to this sensitivity, gas absorption can be visualized and concentration profiles can be derived with high spatial and temporal resolutions. Images can be observed and recorded by adjusting the properties of solution. I have made success in measuring the diffusions of carbon dioxide in water and ethanol. The results are close to theoretical values. So, I think LIF is a promising technology. It is being well developed and applied in the domain of chemical engineering. I wish I could make a breakthrough in this field and I will try my best to achieve it.
