Do you talk to people just to pass the time?
If we are being polite with people, there are only a few things we can choose to say. However, conversations which pass the time can be a little bit more varied(各式各样的).We have “pass time” conversations at parties or before meetings or when we are delayed in a train. Someone will choose a subject and comment on it in a general kind of way. And then someone else will add a comment. In a “pass time” conversation, people don‟t show their individuality(个性)very much.. Usually people agree with each other or only disagree in unimportant ways. And they don‟t try to start a serious discussion or argument which they care about.
“Pass time” conversations are very important if you are traveling and visiting people‟s homes. “Pass time” conversations help you to get to know the other person a little bit. Then you can decide whether you want to get to know them better and to share more useful and interesting conversations. Here is a typical British “pass time” conversation. You can practice it! The other person:It really has been terrible weather in the last few days, hasn‟t it?
You:Absolutely terrible! We haven‟t really had a summer at all!/I think it‟s all right for the gardens./It‟s just the time of year,I think./(and for the humorist)It‟s all right for ducks! If you want to disagree,do so gently and in such a way that you don‟t upset them!
You:To tell you the truth,I‟m quite happy about the rain!

People sometimes talk about serious subjects in “pass time” conversations. And yet they don‟t really say anything which might be too original or disturbing.
51.When________,it is important to have a “pass time” conversation.
A.you have nothing to do B.you meet some strangers on your trip
C.you are waiting for your friend D.you want to show you are different from others 52.What is the example used for? A.It shows what is a “pass time” talk. B.It tells us different ways to start a conversation. C.It gives a situation in which you start a talk. D.It provides an exercise to practice.
53.The example “I‟ve just planted some seeds in the garden and it‟s just what they need.” is intended to________.
A.make the other smile B.explain your disagreement C.express your disagreement D.avoid making the other angry .The writer wants to tell us that________.

Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 19 to a Mexican American family. As the only girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers” because her six brothers,as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school because she was too shy to participate.
In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher,Cisneros improved her grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because he thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the university‟s writers‟ Workshop, however, she felt lonely—a Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “Creative voice”.
“It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn‟t think it had anything to do with why I felt so much imbalance in my life, but it had everything to do with it!That‟s when I decided I would write about something my classmates couldn‟t write about.”
Cisneros published her first work,The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book tells about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in
Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in classes from high school through graduate school level. Since then,Cisneros has published several books of poetry,a children‟s book, and a short-story collection.

Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events—love, sadness, good times or bad times. It tells real life stories and sounds in the way people really talk. As life becomes more complicated(复杂),it is good to hear music about ordinary people. Country music, sometimes called country and western, comes from two kinds of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the West. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s,they started using electric guitars.
At first, city people said country music was low-class. It was popular mostly in the South. But
during the Second World War,thousands of southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.
Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada-in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1,200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty four hours a day. English stars sing it in British English and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor southerners is now popular all over the world. 59.It can be learned from the passage that country music comes from________.

A Japanese Imperial Navy submarine(潜艇),thought to be the first one sunk by a US destroyer during the Dec.7,1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, was discovered in an underwater training area in the harbor.
According to the news from NOAA,the sub was one of five that was supposed to slip into Pearl Harbor and wait for the air attack from the Japanese.
“The sub was found during a routine training dive in a 20footlong submarine. The location,a pile of vehicles and other remains left over from the war,is used as a training ground for maneuvering(机动) and locating exercises for submarine” said John Wilshire, acting director of NURP‟s National Undersea Research Center at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.
“We were taking part in an exercise in an area covered with war remains and there it was,”said Kalvaitis, safety and operations director for NOAA‟s National Undersea Research Program. “I can‟t believe it. It was like finding the Titanic.”
“A shell hole in the sub‟s tower proved that the sub had been shot down,”NOAA said. Historical accounts of the Pearl Harbor attack mentioned that the Ward fired on a Japanese small-sized submarine, but until Wednesday‟s find, the story was unproven. “It was just unbelievable,” Kalvaitis said. “You think it can‟t be happening, but we recognized it right away. It was in good condition and we got within four feet of the conning tower.” The 78-foot submarine is sitting upright and is in “good condition”,Kalvaitis said. Two torpedoes still in their tubes provided additional proofs to the submarine‟s identity. 63.The passage is mainly about________.

A recent survey shows what the students of our school like to do in their spare time. From the pie chat, we can see 53% of the students like sports, so doing sports is the most popular activity in our school. The second popular activity for students is surfing the Internet and 36 % of the students have interest in it. Only a few students, about 8 percent of them, take reading as a hobby. And even fewer are fond of playing musical instruments.
In my point of view, our school should have more sports facilities built to satisfy the need of the students. Guidance should be given to students on surfing the Internet and ways must be found to arouse students‟ interests in reading and music. 选做题B:
Our class had a discussion about whether it is necessary to start learning English from childhood. The students for it think that as little boys and girls have a very good memory, they can learn a lot of English words by heart. This will help them lay a solid foundation for their future English learning.
On the other hand, the students against it believe that young children have to learn Chinese Pinyin at school. If they study Chinese Pinyin and English at the same time, it will be very easy for them to mix them up. This will do a lot of harm not only to their Chinese learning but also to their future English learning.
In short, we have not arrived at any agreement yet.
选做题C:
Do \"Lucky Numbers\" Really Bring Good Luck?
Some people think certain numbers may bring good luck to them. These numbers include \"6,8,9\" and so on. Therefore, when they want to choose a car number or a phone number, they buy the number which ends with these lucky numbers at a high price.
In my opinion, success and luck have nothing to do with such so-called lucky numbers. The only key to success or wealth lies in hard work and persistence. If we are too dependent on the lucky numbers, we may become lazy or even discouraged when they proved to be useless. We should believe in ourselves and make great efforts to struggle for success as well as wealth.
