三、 阅读理解
20. I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died “full of years”, as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故的) woman said to me, “If only I sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today It’s my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, “If only I hadn’t insisted on my mother’s going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the sudden change of climate, was more than she could take. It’s my fault that she’s dead.”
You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course ---keeping Mother at home, putting off the operation--- would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our pressing need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.
The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.
A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons(召唤) the rest of the world to his tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen. 72. What is said about the two deceased elderly women? A. They weren’t used to the cold and the snow. B. They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride. C. They lived out a natural life.
D. They died due to lack of care by family members.
73. People feel guilty for the death of their loved ones because ____. A. they couldn't find a better way to express their sorrow. B. they believed that they were responsible
C. they had neglected the natural course of events
D. they didn't know things often turn in the opposite direction 74. Which of the following is True according to the writer?
A. People should feel guilty when everything turned out wrong.
B. People’s childhood view makes them believe that their wishes cause things to happen.
C. Every effect has its cause.
D. Babies believe that they make things turn out the opposite. 75. What's the idea of the message?
A. Life and death is an unsolved mystery B. Every story should have a happy ending
C. Never feel guilty all the time because not every disaster is our fault
D. In general, the survivors will feel guilty about the people who passed away

21. The baby monkey is much more developed at brith than the human baby. Almost from the moment it is born, the baby monkey can move around and hold tightly to its mother. During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment , particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so , however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on “mother”-----the real mother or the mother-substitute(母亲代替物).
During the first two weeks of its life warmth is perhaps the most important psychological(心理的)thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows, a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes ----one covered with cloth and one make of bare wire. IF the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. However, if the wire model was heated, while the cloth model was cool, for the first two weeks after brith the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites. Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother.
Why is cloth preferable to bare wire? Sometime that the Harlows called contact(接触)comfort seems to be the answer, and a most powerful influence it is. Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers’ skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can. Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed, or annoyed, it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body. Wire does n’t “rub”as well as does soft cloth. Prolonged(长时间)”contact comfort” with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.
According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby’s love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be. It screams in terror and curls up into a furry little ball. If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort, it obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toys, but often rushes back for a deep embrace (拥抱) as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well. Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding onto its mother”.
41. Psychologically, what does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life?
A. Warmth B. Milk C. contact D. trust
42. After the first two weeks of their life, baby monkeys prefer the cloth mother to the wire mother because the former is_______. ks5u A. larger in size B. closer to them

A.it frequently rushes back for a deep embrace when exploring the toys B.it spend more time screaming to get rewards
C.it is less attracted to the toys though they are interesting D.it cares less about whether its mother is still around 45. The main purpose of the passage is to______.
