Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in 13、
other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the \"hurt\" adult, leaving
the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying \"You can't fool Mother Nature.\" But maybe you can't trust her, either. 1.A plover protects its young from a predator by___________. A.getting closer to its young B.driving away the adult predator C.leaving its young in another nest D.pretending to be injured
2.By \"Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky\" (paragraph 5), the author means_______. A.chimps are ready to attack others B.chimps are sometimes dishonest C.chimps are jealous of the winners D.chimps can be selfish too
3.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others. B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand. C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests. D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
4.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A.Do animals lie?
B.Does Mother Nature fool animals? C.How do animals learn to lie?
D.How does honesty help animals survive?

14、Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it repaired, as there are a lot of antique (古董) shops near my home. I’ll give you twenty pounds for it,” he said. “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I added. “Yes, I saw that. It’s nothing,” the shopkeeper replied.
Everything was going according to the plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell after the repair is done.” “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” the man asked in surprise. “Yes, I know. But I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly_________He shouted, “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right,” I said, “And what would you have said if I had walked in and asked you to repair my chair?” “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it. Go to your local public library, and you will find an unusual activity is appearing more and more: Practicing reading with trained dogs. How would you feel about taking time once a week to read aloud to a dog?
Each dog in a reading program experience a special training session. The trainers also receive training; they learn how to interact(互动)with the students and the dogs. Each program has high standards. There have been many studies of the interactions between humans and dogs that show dogs lower people’s blood pressure and heart rate. People become more relaxed and calm and will completely forget what they are scared of when they have a dog nearby.
Unlike at school, where students sit at desks or tables, students and dogs sit together on special reading mats. Some students lie next to the dogs. Each student reads to one dog, so there is a quiet din of voices in the room. The dog has been taught acommandto pay attention to the reader. So when the trainer says something to the dog, it focuses on the studentat once. But sometimes, the students read the dogs to sleep!
The dog’s trainer is also present. He or she watches the dog carefully to make sure that the dog behaves. Sometimes, the trainer gives the dog a break when the dog becomes restless. While the trainer doesn’t help with the reading, the trainer talks to the student about the dog and explains how to take care of pets and how to be safe around animals.
Students who read to dogs show the benefits of this interaction. They are calmer and can avoid worrying about getting all the words correct. The dog just wants to hear the story. As students learn more about the dogs they read to, they also learn that they have gained a new friend.
Not only do students change their reading habits with the dogs during the program, but they also change their school
habits. Their reading skills increase by twelve to twenty percent. They start raising their hands and answering questions more often. They pay more attention in class. Some students start arriving at school earlier and are absent less often. Dogs are not just for playing fetch with anymore. Now they can help people become better readers. Next time you visit your local library, be on the lookout for four-legged creatures (生物) who want to hear a good story. 1.The underlined word “command” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_________”. 18、You can't always predict(预测)a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weatherforecastbefore going out should cause you to get wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post(柱)with its own rain-sensing(感应)umbrella.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be fit to have a canopy(伞篷) built into a street lamp,” he said.
The Lampbrella is a post-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric machine which can open or close the umbrella. Sensors(传感器) then make sure that the umbrella offers walkers shelter(遮蔽) whenever it starts raining.
Besides the rain sensor, there's also a 360° moving sensor on the street lamp which finds whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a rather low speed, in order not to hurt the walkers. Besides, it would be fixed on the ground to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being fixed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of walkers.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and believes that his creation could be fixed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
1.. What does the underlined word “forecast” mean in Chinese? A.预报 B.情况 C.查询
2.. For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella? A.To remind people to take an umbrella. B.To check the weather forecast. C.To protect people from the rain.

4.. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

19、Last week, I visited Agriculture Carnival(农业嘉年华), the Science and Technology Museum, the Capital Museum with my best friend, Liu Bing. It was my first time to go there. The moment we arrived there, we found that the building was grand. When we walked into it, there was a big hall in front of us. And then there were several rooms to show different kinds objects. There was a room for collecting scripts and paintings. There was another room to store clothes and shoes in the old times. The next room was for collecting the daily necessities in the old days. In a word, all the things in it had a long history. I learnt some knowledge from it.
