It was a warm and sunny morning at the Central Park Zoo. Mary and her classmates were chatting noisily with excitement as their school bus entered the zoo parking lot. Today, Mary’s class was going on a field trip to the zoo to learn more about the animals and their natural habitats.
“Before you leave the bus, please make sure you have your partner!” Mrs. Brown announced. To make sure no one got lost in the zoo, each student had a companion. Mary’s companion was named John. John loves animals and was also excited to go to the zoo. But sometimes, John does not follow the rules and gets in trouble. Mary hoped that today, John would follow the rules so they would not get in trouble.
While the rest of the students got off the bus, Mary and John quickly ran off to explore. They found the exhibits for many different kinds of animals and learned a lot about their natural habitats. They saw the elephants playing and they saw giraffes eating. They saw the polar bears sleeping and the monkeys leaping. Mary asked John:
“John, what is your favorite animal?”
“I think I like chimpanzees best. They have a lot of energy, just like me! What animal do you like, Mary?”
“I love polar bears! I think their lifestyle in the Arctic is very interesting.”
A few hours later, Mary and John started to feel hungry. They made their way back to the zoo entrance to eat lunch at the Rainforest Café. The Rainforest Café is both Mary and John’s
favorite restaurant because there is an aquarium inside. The restaurant is also famous for its chocolate cake, which Mary ordered for dessert after they had finished their lunch.
As Mary was finishing her cake, John excused himself to go to the restroom. About ten minutes later, an suddenly alarm began to go off and a voice came over the loudspeaker, “Attention! Someone has opened the chimpanzee exhibit! Some chimpanzees have escaped!”
People were screaming and starting to run. Mary looked for John, but he was nowhere to be found.

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was raining hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village. On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.
The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, “Are these yours?” “Yes, sir.” the farmer answered timidly(胆怯地). “Have you killed the man?” “No, no, sir.” the farmer said in a hurry. “When did you see the dead man?” “About seven last evening.” “Did you see who killed the man?” “No, sir.” The officer brought out a knife and asked, “Have you seen it yet?” “No, sir.” The officer became angry and told the policemen to

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn’t going to stop my little sister Kate a nd me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.
Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lantems gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.
There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts,小妖精), or
Jack-o-Lantems. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.
\"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween,\" Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.
\"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her,\" I said and knocked on the door.
Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. \" Is today Halloween?\" she asked. \"I completely forgot. I am so sorry!\"

4、A Mother's Love
My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.
There was one day during elementary school (小学) when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, \"Your mom only has one eye!\"
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted (面对) her that day and said, \"If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?\"
My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.
I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.
Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.
When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, \"How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW\"
And to this, my mother quietly answered, \"Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address.\" and she was soon out of sight.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion (同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.
My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground. 注意:

I truly learned what a best friend is in my first year in high school. Kate and I were good friends and we were inseparable (分不开的). We spent every day together and always had a good time.
Then basketball season started and we were on the same team. After a few games, however, Kate got moved up to the Rose Cup full-time. I wouldn't admit it then, but as a matter of fact I envied (嫉妒) her much. Having different practice times, we began to see less of each other and talked less. Soon I was told by others that she was talking behind my back.
One night, I called Kate to tell her about my new haircut. To my great surprise, the next day at school she told everyone that I copied her style because she had told me she wanted to get hers cut like this. As a result, I was angry and quite disappointed with her. At noon she handed me a letter and walked away instead of talking with me. I couldn't accept the cruel words on the paper. The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
\"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.\" someone yelled. Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊) through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was
doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas (睡衣;宽长裤) — running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
\"She might have run for safety like everyone else!\" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. \"I know Makcik’s still inside.\" She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily r outine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. \"Go downstairs. Go now! Go!\"

She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her, her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot o f money. Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the
scolding from her mother.
Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood
beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, \"Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?\"
\"Oh, yes… but I don't have money on me…\" she replied. \"That's nothing. I'll treat you today,\" said the man. \"Come in.\" The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
\"What is it?\" asked the man kindly.
\"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!\" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. \"Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!\"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, \"Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?\"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered hands. \"Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.\"
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an
apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do, I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young
man talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars, Ms.?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to ex plain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to have roses,” he said, “my mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed(幸运的) in his bu siness, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard(墓地).

It was my first time to go ice skating, so I was nervous. I was wondering how to skate. I went with a friend who was very skillful. He spent some time teaching me how to skate, but I didn't learn much. He left me and skated all around. As soon as he left, I fell down. I envied the other people because they could skate very well.
I was bored because I kept falling so I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold and my hands were frozen.
Suddenly, I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it? It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped there, I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die, but I did my best
to grab something to get out from under the ice. I tried to grab the edge of the ice. But it was very difficult for an eleven-year-old child.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up. So, I lived and I'm still alive today.
I thanked him. At that time, my friend came back. I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of me, but he didn't. He was embarrassed. When she was 22 years old, Pat Jones decided to travel around the world and see as many foreign places as she could when she was young. When she finished college at home in Britain, Pat chose to visit Latin America first. She managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia. Pat spoke a little Spanish,so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.
A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind :If you dream in a foreign language, it means that you have really mastered it. Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in
Spanish and they would dream in English.
One day, Tim, one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early, but slept badly. Pat was quite angry with him, for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told
her that he dreamed all night and his dream was in English.
“In English!”Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also jealous (嫉妒的). Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her student and asked him to tell her about his dream.
