Treasure Island is a famous adventure story. The hero, Jim Hawkins, finds a map. It belongs to Captain Flint. Captain Flint is a pirate(海盗) and has lots of gold. He hides his gold before he dies, and the map shows where it is. It’s on an island in the Caribbean. Jim and his friends buy a ship, recruit(招募) some sailors and go to the island to look for the gold.
They set sail but then they discover that Long John Silver, the cook, and the other men on the ship are all pirates. They are planning to kill them. As soon as they get to the island, Jim and his friends fight the pirates. The pirates don’t kill them, but they take the map.
The pirates go to look for the gold, and Jim follows them. They find the place, but the gold isn’t there. Later, Jim gets to know that it’s all because of Ben Gunn. A) 根据短文内容,按要求答题。(回答62—65题时,不得超过五个单词。) As with facial(面部) expressions, people everywhere use hand gestures(手势) to communicate(交流). Around the world, these have different meanings. A friendly hand gesture used in one culture might be unfamiliar or even rude in another.
Gestures for “hello” and “good-bye” differ around the world. In North and South America, and many parts of Europe, people often shake hands to greet others—especially in business. In North America, men and women shake hands firmly. This shows respect for the other person. In many Asian countries, it is often more common to nod the head once, or bow(鞠躬) when meeting for the first time.
To gesture good-bye in North America, many people wave one of their hands from left to right many times quickly. Americans also do this to greet someone in a friendly, casual way. In many Asian countries, this gesture often means “no”.
In many countries, to gesture that something is “okay” it is common to join the thumb(拇指) and forefinger together to make a circle, with the other three fingers standing up. In Brazil this gesture is very rude. In some countries, like France, it means “zero”.
In the Unites States, it is common to beckon(召唤) a person to you by raising your hand with the palm facing you, and moving the forefinger from one side to another. This gesture is considered rude in some countries, so more often people will hold their hand with the palm facing down, and move the whole hand from one side to another.
Hand gestures, like facial expressions, communicate important messages. When traveling or meeting someone from another country, be careful how you use them. 62. Do hand gestures have the same meanings in different countries?

There are many special hotels around the world. In Greenland, there is a hotel made out of ice, open between December and April every year. In Turkey, there is a cave hotel with a television, furniture, and a bathroom in each room. And in Bolivia, there is the Salt Palace Hotel.
Thousands of years ago, the area around the Salt Palace Hotel was a large lake. But over time, all the water disappeared. Today, the area has only two small lakes and two salt deserts.
The larger of the two deserts, the Uyuni salt desert, is 12,000 square kilometres. During the day, the desert is bright white because of the salt. There are no roads across the Uyuni desert, so local people must show guests the way to the hotel.
In the early 1990s, a man named Juan Quesada built the hotel. He cut big blocks of

Who's building the new China? It's not the factory owners or the business men and women of China. It's someone else. It's the people who have left their homes to follow their dreams, the dream of a better life.
We see them every day, on every street corner, on every construction site(建筑工地) in cities. They work day and night in the terrible working conditions and weather. They build the roads, the theaters, the cinemas, and the supermarkets. They even clean up our rubbish. They are China’s migrant workers(民工). Young and old, these men and women are building the new China from the ground up.
More than 140 million workers have left their homes in the countryside to look for jobs in big cities all over China. They hope to be rich, but they realize they have many difficulties in making enough money for their family. And the biggest difficulty that these workers have is the pride and discrimination ( 歧视) from the people in cities. When night falls, everywhere I look I see the sad faces of the migrant workers. We can see them playing cards along the streets. Many are living far away from those whom they love. I can sometimes feel their pain(痛), knowing exactly what it feels like to live so far away from home in a city where they walk a different walk and talk a different talk. Yes, they dress differently, they speak differently, and they have different habits, but they work hard to make money. The people in cities consider them as outsiders, and some local governments refuse to give them medical care and public schooling for their children.

Advertisements are an important part of our lives. We are so used to them that we often do not even realize how many we see and hear in a day!
10
What is an advertisement?
An advertisement provides information and uses creative languages and attractive pictures to encourage people to buy a product(产品) or service or believe in an idea. Newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radios and televisions are the most places to find advertisements. There are two main types of advertisements―commercial advertisements and public service advertisements (PSAs). A commercial advertisement is one which someone has paid for to promote (提升) a product or service. PSAs are often placed for free, and are used to educate people about health, safety, or any other issue which affects public welfare(公共福利). Does an advertisement tell people the complete truth?
China has strong laws to protect people from advertisements that lie or try to make people believe untrue promises about products or services. However, we still must be careful with the methods(方法) used in advertisements to try and sell us things. Even if an ad does not lie, it does not mean it tells you the complete truth. One toothpaste ad says 'Bright-teeth fights bad breath!' The advertisers want you to read the word 'fights' and think that the toothpaste cures bad breath, but it does not say that! All it says is that it fights it and that is not the same thing at all. One supermarket tells buyers, 'You are proud of your cooking, so shouldn't you buy the freshest food?' This one is very clever, because it tells buyers that they are good cooks. However, the ad never says that this supermarket has the freshest food! They just hope that you read the ad, you will feel good about what it says and remember the words 'freshest food' and then buy it in the supermarket. We must not fall for this kind of trick! Public service advertisements
Not all ads play tricks on us though. PSAs use some of the same methods, but they are made to serve the public. PSAs are meant to teach us and help us lead better lives. You have probably seen or heard some of them yourself, like 'Yes to life, no to drugs' and 'Knowledge changes life'. These ads deal with large social issues. There are also PSAs that educate people about public service projects, such as Project Hope. All of these ads are meant to be helpful, and you can often learn a lot by following the advice they give. Try to remember: think about why you should do or buy the things the ad suggests. We all want to be smart about what we believe, so be smart about advertisements

The most interesting jobs are often the most difficult. People take a long time to learn how to do them. Doctors study for at least six years after finishing school. Airline pilots study longer. They have to learn to fly small aircraft first, and then slowly move up to bigger and bigger aircraft. Most airline pilots are at least 30 years old.
Some young people have interesting and well-paid jobs. Many successful athletes are young. Football and tennis stars are usually under 35. Older people usually cannot play these sports very well. They cannot move fast enough. Golf, however, is a good sport for older people. Many successful golfers are quite old.
