I Live in the Beautiful City of Beijing
Hi there! My name is Li Ming and I'm 10 years old. I live in the capital city of China - Beijing! Beijing is such a beautiful and amazing place. I feel so lucky to call this incredible city my home. Let me tell you all about it!
Beijing is a massive city with over 21 million people living here. That's a lot of people! The city covers a huge area, with lots of different districts and neighborhoods. Right in the center is the old historic part of the city, with the famous Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and so many amazing temples, palaces, and other traditional buildings. I love visiting this part of Beijing and imagining what it was like hundreds of years ago when emperors ruled from the Forbidden City.
Some of the oldest areas have these maze-like
neighborhoods called hutongs. The hutongs are made up of tiny alleys and courtyards with traditional courtyard homes lining the paths. It's like stepping back in time when you walk through the hutongs. So much history and culture! My favorite is getting lost in the Shichahai area near the lake and discovering fun shops, restaurants, and hidden gems tucked away.
One of my favorite parts of the city is the parks and green spaces. Beijing has so many amazing parks to explore. My favorite is Jingshan Park right behind the Forbidden City. You can climb up on the hill and look out over the ancient royal palaces and temples. The views are breathtaking! Beihai Park, Zhongshan Park, and Chaoyang Park are also wonderful urban oases filled with gardens, lakes, and quiet spaces to relax.
Speaking of outdoor spaces, the Summer Palace is one of the top attractions in Beijing. It's this massive imperial garden and lake that used to be the summer retreat for China's
emperors. You can spend all day there just wandering the ornate temples, gardens, bridges, and walking paths. My class took a field trip there last year and it was such an incredible place. Another must-see is the Great Wall of China. While the famous sections like Badaling are outside the city, you can still get a glimpse of the Great Wall from places like Jingshan Park. This massive fort stretches for thousands of miles across north China and was built so long ago to protect the empire. It's one of the most impressive structures ever built by humans! I'm going camping on the Great Wall for a night this summer and I can't wait.
Speaking of camping, did you know there are mountains and forests right inside the city of Beijing? My family loves going hiking in the Fragrant Hills or Badachu Park in the western part of the city. The fresh air and nature is such a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
As you can probably tell, there is so much history and culture everywhere you look in Beijing. I love learning about the rich heritage of my city and my country at school and seeing it come alive when I visit sites like the Beijing Ancient Observatory to look at antique astronomy tools or trying my hand at Chinese calligraphy or paper cutting. Beijing is the heart of Chinese civilization and you can feel that heart still beating strongly today.
While Beijing has its downsides like any massive city (the traffic and crowds can be overwhelming!), I feel so grateful to be growing up in such a vibrant, historic, diverse, and exciting place. From seeing the flag rise at dawn over Tiananmen Square, to riding the super-fast subway, to hiking the Great Wall, to watching amazing acrobat shows, Beijing is a city that is never boring. There is always something new to experience or discover. Beijing has been the capital of China for centuries, surviving wars, invasions, dynasties, and revolutions. Yet it continues
thriving as a global center of economics, culture, and innovation today. I can't wait to see what the future holds for my beloved hometown as it continues reshaping itself for a new era. Beijing is a magical place where the ancient and modern worlds collide in the most fascinating ways. I'm proud to call Beijing my home.
