One day while surfing on the Internet,I typed“Cassie”and “dog” into the search bar, just out of interest.I clicked on a few websites and had a look at the various dogs that were also called Cassie.
I came across one site for pet adoption based in the US with a success story about a Cassie who had been adopted. The new owners had sent pictures of her in her new home to the website.I decided to send an e-mail to the woman who ran the website, along with a picture of my dog.
I didn't expect to hear anything back, because I assumed they were far away and probably busy. But the owner of the dog refuge,Mrs.Clark, sent me back a lovely e-mail saying she was sorry for my loss, and agreed that it was amazing that the two dogs looked so similar and had the same name. She told me that Cassie was no longer with the same owners, and had been brought back to the refuge and adopted by another couple.
A few days later,I received another e-mail from Mr.and Mrs.Cooper, who now looked after the American Cassie-the lady from the refuge had sent my e-mail to them. The couple had attached some recent photos of their Cassie, saying how glad they were to have her. They then passed on their sympathy and wished me well.
I was so pleased that the American Cassie had found a lovely new home.It was also so heart-warming that people on the other side of the world would take the time to send their well-wishes to a stranger.

The recent milk crisis (危机)around the country has revealed many well-known domestic milk products, including those from Mengniu and Yili and even White Rabbit Creamy Candy, are tainted(污染)with melamine(三聚氰胺).
Melamine is a chemical that is usually used in making plates and plastics. It is banned in food and can produce kidney (肾)stones. But some milk collectors put melamine into milk to make it look rich in protein (蛋白质)in quality tests.Till last week, more than 53,000 babies in China have been proved ill after drinking contaminated milk.Four of them died.
“The milk collection system is out of control and led to the crisis. The government will crack down on the collection centers with the greatest determination and toughest measures,”said Sun Zhencai, minister of agriculture.

This kind of milk has been sterilized at temperatures as high as 137 degrees centigrade. Some nutrients, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin D,are lost at such high temperatures. But “pure milk”can be preserved for 1 to 8 months, and it doesn't have to be stored in a refrigerator.

(2010·三亚市高三检测)No fight can end, and no friendship can move on, until everyone says these little words: I'm sorry. Sometimes, though, they can be difficult to say. 1
It is not about winning.
Friendships aren't like the Super Bowl, and there should never be a winner and a loser. When you start fighting with a friend, it may feel important that you “win” the fight by proving you're right and he is wrong, or by making him be the first to apologize.
In reality, you'll both lose if you let your fight ruin your friendship, and you'll both win if you find a way to heal it.
2 You may have heard the expression “His pride stood in the way”. It is usually used to describe a person who is so determined to be “right” that he lets an opportunity for happiness pass him by forever. 3 Remember: as time goes on, we usually forget who was right and who was wrong in a disagreement, and only remember the sadness of losing a friend. Take the first step.
Are you sick of fighting? Do you think this fight is just not important enough to ruin your friendship? 4 You don't have to take full responsibility for starting the fight, or even say that your feelings were wrong.. But you should find something you did or said that's worth apologizing for. Maybe you're sorry that you let the fight go for so long, or that you overreacted to something your friend did. If you say you're sorry, it's like an invitation for your friend to do the same. 5 A.Then try to be the first to apologize. B.Stop thinking about your pride.
C.It's about taking some responsibility for the argument. D.Don't let this happen to a friendship you care about E.Here are some things to keep in mind.
F.There are some special cases when you shouldn't be the one to apologize first. G.Once you've both said it, you'll both feel a million times better. 答案:1~5 EBDAG
以下两个题型供山东、天津使用 Ⅱ.阅读理解
I'm Into the Coldest of Comforts
Some people love eating food right out of the oven.I prefer the freezer.
Fruit, candy, nuts, chocolate, cookies, cake with butter cream frosting(糖霜),even peas:All of them taste delicious frozen. In fact,I often like them better that way.
I was a kid when I picked up the habit.Lots of things got thrown into the freezer—finally, two freezers—to prevent them from rotting(腐烂).That included some of the candy my sisters and I collected on Halloween.
You find yourself enjoying the tastes more than you might if,say, you were quickly having cookies still warm from the oven.I'm not saying that the straight-out-of-the-oven thing is bad;I'm just saying there is something better.
It's better if we can slow down when we eat. We'll eat less and enjoy it more. That's the point about frozen butter cream frosting.Put it in your mouth at room temperature, and it's gone very quickly. But when it's frozen, you can enjoy the taste so much longer as
it melts in your mouth. The freezer treats a lot of fruits kindly.Take frozen grapes for example:I became addicted(上瘾)to them a few years ago.Now I keep a bowl of grapes in my freezer. They become a little icy,and somehow their sweetness is improved.A perfect and healthful dessert.
Strawberries,apples,bananas...You might think bananas would get super-hard when frozen.Wrong.They become cold, creamy and less sweet. If you have wisely covered some or all of the banana with melted chocolate before putting it into the freezer,it will have a double taste.
There are vegetables to be considered.I like frozen peas on a salad.
As long as you aren't eating something that truly has to be cooked,go ahead and experiment.

(2010·日照市高三模拟)[1]Researchers have uncovered the reason why flu mainly strikes in winter.
[2]It is a mystery that has puzzled doctors for decades. But experts believe they have now finally solved this tricky question of why winter is notoriously known as the flu season.
[3]According to new research, the influenza virus coats itself in a protective fatty shield that is tough enough to withstand cold temperatures.
[4]The butter-like material only melts when it hits the respiratory(呼吸用的)system, leaving the virus free to infect cells—a process scientists say is like a chocolate melting in the mouth.
[5]However,in warmer outdoor temperatures, the protective coating melts before it reaches a person or an animal, killing the germs before .
[6]Joshua Zimmerberg from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development(NICHD) in the US,which led the study, said,“Like a chocolate in your mouth, the protective covering melts when it enters the respiratory system. It's only in this liquid period that the virus is capable of entering a cell to infect it.”
[7]In the past, scientists worked on theories that flu was more common in winter because people spent more time inside or the radiation from the sun in summer killed off germs. But no research has successfully explained the spread of the disease.
[8]Researchers have already claimed that the report, which was published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology, could lead to new ways to prevent and treat flu.
[9]Duane Alexander, the director of NICHD,said,“The study results open new
avenues of research for thwarting(成功地抵制)winter flu outbreaks.”
[10]“ Now that we understand how the flu virus protects itself so that it can spread from person to person,we can work on ways to interfere with that protective mechanism.”
[11]Research also finds that influenza and other respiratory viruses are spread in small droplets emitted by coughing, sneezing and talking which can settle onto surfaces and be picked up on fingertips.
