Who take cares of the elderly in the United States today? Many people wrongly believe that when people reach old age, their families place them in the hands of strangers for the rest of their lives, their grown children visit tem only occasionally, but more often, they do not have any regular visitors. The truth is that this idea is an unfortunate made-up story. In fact, family members provide over 80 percent of the care that the elderly people need.
Because Americans are living longer than ever, more social workers have begun to study care-giving to improve care of the elderly. They have found that all caregivers share something in common: all caregivers believe that they are the best person for the job. One caregiver said that she had always been close to her mother. Another was the oldest child. In other words, they all felt that they could do the job better than anyone else. Social workers interviewed caregivers to find out why they took on the responsibility of caring for the elderly. They discovered three basic reasons. If you live in a city in North America or Europe, you have probably never thought much about water. Whenever you need some, you turn on the tap(水龙头) and the it is. Scientist believes that the lack of clean water may be one for the biggest issues in the twenty-first century.
The reasons for this are clear. Not the one hand, people are using more water than ever. Over the last fifty years, the population of the would has more than doubled. So has the demand for water. On the other
hand, supplies of clean water are disappearing. Many sources of surface water are too polluted and unhealthy for use as drinking water. This has forced more and more people to drill wells so they can get clear water from underground.

Passage Three
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.
Employees are a company’s new ideas, its public face and its main asset. Hiring the right people is therefore the most important factor in a company’s success. On the other hand, recruiting the wrong staff can lead to disaster. If the human resources (HR) department makes mistakes with hiring, keeping and dismissing staff, a business can disappear very quickly. Many companies now realize that recruiting the best recruiters (招聘人员) is the key to success.
Why do people go into HR as their first choice? Choy has a ready answer:” I think most people in the profession are attracted by a long-term goal. Since it’s one of the few areas where you can see the whole operation, it can lead to an influential (有影响的) role on the management. Nothing happens in the company which isn’t affected by or doesn’t influence its employees, so the HR department is a very important part of any business.”
However, not all people agree. A survey of attitudes to HR departments received comments such as “What do they actually contribute?” But rising levels of pay show that the profession’s growing importance is widely recognized. As Choy points out, salaries have never been higher and, in addition, HR managers often receive large annual bonuses.
Despite the financial rewards, HR managers often feel they are not properly valued, and this is a major reason for many leaving their jobs. A lack of training and development is a more significant factor,” These days, good professional development opportunities are considered an essential part of an attractive package.” Choy explains.

32. According to Choy, the reason why people go into HR is mainly that______________
A) They are able to determine the future of the company B) They can decide the fate of their employees in the company C) Their work can influence the operation of the company D) Their work can lead to a long-term contract with their bosses 33. Some people don’t believe that HR managers should get high pay because________________
A) They contribute little to the company’s operation B) Their annual bonuses are already higher than others’
C) Their work has never been widely acknowledged D) They exert no influence on the management’s decisions 34. According to the passage, why do many HR managers leave their jobs?

Passage Four
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.
If you or a loved one were having a heart attack and could choose between a teaching hospital and a traditional hospital, two new studies suggest the teaching hospital would be the better choice.
Because they have more doctors, with more access to the latest information, teaching hospitals kept alive more people with heart attacks and other major illnesses, according to a study in the latest New England Journal of Medicine.
The advantage for heart attack victims was simple—quicker application of the standard treatments at both teaching and non-teaching hospitals.
“There are many more people in teaching hospitals than there are in non-teaching hospitals,” Cassirer says. “There is a lot of consultation (专家会诊) that goes on.”
However, the studies ranked non-teaching hospitals better at supporting patients emotionally.
“Teaching hospitals are big places,” Cassirer says. “So it’s much more difficult to do that.”
Also, care costs more at teaching hospitals—about 5 percent more on average.
Supporters of the major teaching hospitals say they have cut some costs, but that cutting too much would damage their most important responsibility, which is the training of good doctors.
“It’s hard to measure in dollars and cents, but I think it’s recognizable in the standard of care available in the United States, something the rest of the world admires”, says Dr.Jordan of the Association of American
Teaching Hospitals.
