My First Day of School
Fear started taking over, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would be better off going to school here, so I enrolled(登记)in the local high school in my new town. I was afraid how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second period class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered. “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology we had. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsher(刺耳的)one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.” I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I spotted my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t o bad.

Why do you go to the library? For books, yes--but you like books because they tell stories. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else's life. At one type of library, you can do just that--even though there's not a single book.
At a Human Library, instead of books, you can “borrow” people. Individuals volunteer as human “books” and participants in the event can “read” the book--meaning they would have a one-on-one conversation with the volunteer and share in a dialogue about that individual's experience. “Books” are volunteers from all walks of life who have experienced discrimination (歧视) based on race, religion, class, gender identity, age, lifestyle choices, disability and other aspects of their life

For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are as fascinating and as attractive as any you can find in a book. Many of the stories have to do with some kind of stereotype. You can speak with a refugee (难民), a soldier suffering from PTSD, a homeless person or a woman living with HIV. The Human Library encourages people to challenge their own long-held beliefs-to truly get to know, and learn from someone they might otherwise make a quick judgment about.
According to its website, the Human Library is “a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.” It provides the opportunity for the community to share and understand the experiences of others in their community.
The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000. Ronni Abergel, his brother Dany, and some colleagues hosted a four-day event during a major Northern European festival, hoping to raise awareness about violence among youth. After the success of this event, Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, which has been growing ever since.
Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren’t places at all, but events. Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don’t need a library card—anyone can come and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe, in universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio.
The stories these \"books\" tell range from fascinating to heartbreaking and everything in between. And that's the very point of the organization--to prove that no person can be summed up in just one word. It seeks to show people that you truly can't judge a book by its cover---or by its title or label. 39. The “books” in human libraries are____________. A. long-held beliefs attracting individuals B. inspiring stones motivating people in trouble C. events in which people can talk to volunteers D. unfairly-treated people sharing their experiences
40. The event in Copenhagen is significant because it_______. A. aimed to help the young suffering from violence B. attempted to replace traditional physical libraries C. laid a foundation for the Human Library Organization D. led to a pleasing development for the community with racism 41. Imagine walking through an ancient city, then climbing a gate tower to take in a wonderful view of the city and its more than 600-year-old walls. You can hear the city’s heartbeat in the air. This is the Ancient City of Pingyao in Shanxi Province, a place that should definitely be on your travel route if you enjoy history or ancient architecture since its origins can be traced back to more than 2,700 years ago.
Located in the center of Shanxi Province, Pingyao is the hometown of Jin merchants, a group of merchants who actively dominated (支配) a booming commodity market throughout China for more than 500 years, especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the city’s agriculture and manufacturing industries developed rapidly. Following China’s reform and opening-up in the 1980s, Pingyao struggled with the transition from a managed economy to the current market-oriented economy. During this time, the city government sought out new ways to break through this economic bottleneck.
Finally in the winter of 1997, opportunity came knocking. Through the efforts of the city government, Pingyao earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list, which caused the entire world to take notice of the city.
Since the city’s fame has risen, locals in Pingyao have deepened their understanding of the conservation efforts preserving the historical relics in their hometown. Meanwhile the city administration has continued to upgrade itself through a strategy that follows the pillars of “conservation, entrepreneurship, development and protection.”
Currently, the city is focused on establishing a sustainable industry that will enable it to continue to grow while also protecting its relics and introducing them to the world.

At school, I was in the top set for maths. My teachers recommended that I study economics and statistics as my A-level subjects, but I had my mind set on a life fulfilled by the arts.
In fact, I was a victim of a gender stereotype made stronger since birth, that men do science and maths and women do arts or languages. Computer science, technology and physics just did not figure in my teenage world view. Nobody popular in my school chose to study those subjects.
Reality struck hard when I began attending job interviews and interviewers would say: “It’s great that you speak foreign languages, but what else do you do?” Nobody asked my friends who had studied science or technology those questions.
A survey recently showed that three of the best-paid jobs for women are in the technology sector. It’s a sector that really can change the world. We must show girls that technology has an effect on every industry out there, from fashion to architecture to journalism. Anybody can learn to code and these days it’s as important as reading and writing. I’ve realized that at university I’d achieved the wrong kind of literacy. Not being able to code limit your impact on the world far more than an ignorance of great literature.
Now I have a five-year-old daughter. I don’t want her to blindly follow gender roles the way I did. I want her to know the fact that a science or technical degree will not limit her creativity but expand it and broaden her horizons far more than my arts background could. I’m exposing her to Minecraft and apps, which help improve analytical thinking and problem solving skills. I’m hoping that my daughter will discover and accept her potentials in science and want to change the world.

Last year, when our three-year-old great-granddaughter Kylie was taken to see Santa Claus, she made sure to give him her wish list of toys. A week later, she ran into a different Santa in a mall. He stopped to ask what she wanted for Christmas. Kylie was surprised and let him know: “If you can’t remember what I told you last week, how are you going to remember on Christmas Eve?!”
Mary Paul, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
As my son Mike and I drove to the mall, we passed a Salvation Army Santa ringing his bell. “Mike,” I said, “there’s Santa!” He shook his head. “That’s just some guy in a Santa suit,” he said. It saddened me to think that maybe my son no longer believed in Santa, and we drove the rest of the way in silence. At the mall, we spotted another Santa greeting young believers. Suddenly, Mike took off toward him. Turning back to me, he shouted. “Now, there’s the real Santa!”

Dutch beachcomber (海滩拾荒者) Wim Kruiswijk has accumulated a collection of 1,200 messages-in-bottles over the course of nearly 4 decades and has responded to almost all of them,
68-year-old Kruiswijk says that his unusual hobby began in 1983 when he found three drift bottles (漂流瓶) on his local beach, each containing letters and return addresses. He wrote to all three addresses and was surprised to receive responses from each one. It was this experience that aroused his interest in hunting and collecting messages in bottles, and he hasn’t stopped looking for them since.
“I find my messages in bottles on the beach of Zandvoort, where I live. and on the Dutch Islands,” Kruiswijk recently told Great Big Story. “Messages in bottles is slow mail, It takes you days, or weeks, or months to find a bottle. ”
In the early years, Kruiswijk would find as many as 50 bottles a year, but since 2000 that has slowed to around 20-30 finds, mainly due to beach cleaning efforts. He believes that the rise of the Internet has also played a role in the diminishing number of messages in bottles, telling Dutch news site PZC, “I used to get a response at hall the bottle messages that I answered. Now that’s less; many people want ‘instant satisfaction’. ”
Throwing a message in a bottle out into the sea is a longstanding human tradition dating back to the time of the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, about 310 BC,who used the bottles to study water currents. Scientists still apply the method to this day, as a means to help researchers develop ocean circulation maps, and to crowdsource scientific studies of ocean currents.
In the past bottles have also been used to send distress messages from sailors in trouble. They also have been used for memorial tributes, or to send loved ones’ ashes on a final journey, One of the more common uses though is just to send invitations out to prospective pen pals. a quaint notion in these modern times, but, as Kruiswijk so clearly shows, an effective one. 4. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

C. How Kruiswijk formed the hobby of collecting drift bottles. D. Kruiswijk liked to do some research on bottles thrown into the sea.
5. How did Kruiswijk feel the first time he received response from drift bottles? A. Satisfied. B. Asionished. C. Frightened. D. Disappointed.
6. Why do Kruiswijk find fewer drift bottles than before? A. People hate to receive messages from strangers,
B. Many drift bottles have not been washed up onto the beaches . C. Drift bottles appearing on the beach are cleared up rapidly. D. Fewer people are interested in Kruiswijk’s message in bottles. 7. What’s the purpose of Theophrastus using the bottles? A. To ask for rescue, B. To look for a pen pal. C. To study ocean currents.
D. To send a message to his loved person. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. C

And that’s when the package arrived.
“What’s this?” I thought as I tore into it. The box revealed a sweatshirt. “Phi Delta Theta? That’s Kyle’s frat (兄弟会).” Kyle was the president of the frat house. Why would he send this? I put it aside and dug deeper. A pile of letters. And they were all addressed to me. I opened the one on top.
“Katrina,” it said, “your brother showed me your picture and I think you’re awesome and beautiful.” I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, sure.” I opened another letter. And another. Eighteen in all.
Each one was from a different guy. They complimented (恭维) me. They invited me on dates. And they tried to convince me to make a trip out to Knox College and meet them.
I loved it. I didn’t care about the motive. And mostly, I loved the idea that my big brother had pulled it off. I picked up the phone.
“Kyle, the box came and I can’t believe what you did.” But Kyle wasn’t accepting compliments. “Oh,” he said, “I was just tired of reading your complaints”. 10. Airborne dust is normally seen as an environmental problem, but the lack of it is making air pollution over China considerably worse.
A new study suggests less dust means more solar radiation hits the land surface, which reduces wind speed. That lack of wind in turn leads to an accumulation of air pollution over heavily populated parts of China. The researchers found that reduced dust levels cause a 13% increase in human-made pollution in the region.
Hundreds of millions of people across China continue to be impacted by air pollution from factories and coal-fired power plants. Studies suggest that the dirty air contributes to 1.6 million deaths a year, about 17% of all

mortalities. But this new research says that the human-induced pollution is being made worse or better by naturally occurring dust that blows in from the Gobi desert. Using models to simulate 150 years of wind and dust patterns in the region, the researchers found that the dust deflects significant amounts of sunlight. Without it, more heat from the Sun hits the land. Differences in the temperatures between land and sea cause the winds to blow. Without the dust, the land warms up more and that changes the temperature differential with the sea leading to weaker breezes - and more air pollution.
\"There are two dust sources. One is the Gobi and the other is the highlands of north-west China, but we found the Gobi had much more influence,\" said lead author Yang Yang, from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington State, US. \"Less dust in the atmosphere causes more solar radiation to reach the surface. It weakens the temperature difference between the land and the sea and impacts the circulation of the winds and causes a stagnation over eastern China and that causes an accumulation of air pollution.\"
Another study has recently shown a link between declining Arctic sea ice and a major air pollution event in China in 2013. The authors of the new study believe that both theories could be true.
\"Our study has the same mechanism: the weakening of winds causes more pollution, and what is behind this needs to be studied,\" said Yang Yang, \"We have two views on this kind of weakening of wind. They found the sea ice, we found the dust-wind interaction can also lead to weakening of the wind. I think both of them are important.\"
The researchers believe that the study may inform broader questions about how natural and human-created aerosols interact.
Many parts of the world, in addition to China, are now suffering from increased levels of air pollution and understanding how dust, winds and emissions work together may help limit some of the worst impacts of dirty air. One of the key lessons from this study is that the absence of dusty conditions could mean the air you are breathing is worse for you, not better.

11. Forget losing weight or saving money—we suggest one simple task to add to your list of inspiring New Year’s decisions: read a book. Trust us, and your brain will thank you. Not only does reading increase the amount of daily pleasure in your life, but it could also delay dementia (痴呆) and even help you live longer.
But still, picking the perfect novel isn’t easy. Thankfully, Business Insider asked a Harvard professor to recommend the one book he thinks every student should read in 2018—and we suggest adding it to your list, too. (No time for all the books on your list? Here’s a shortcut: Read the endings to some of the world’s most famous books, instead.)
Steven Pinker, Professor of Psychology at Harvard, recommends The Internationalists by legal scholars Hathaway and Shapiro. The book makes a surprising claim that the Kellogg-Briand Paris Peace Pact (条约) of 1928, which declared war illegal, has caused a steady drop in war throughout history.
“But in their fascinating and evidence-rich book, they make a lifelike case,” Pinker said. “And like The Clash

of Civilizations and The End of History, the book presents a sweeping vision (视野) of the international scene, making sense of many developments in the news and recent history.”
Other professors at Harvard recommended classics like Anna Karenina by Tolstoy, as well as Just Mercy by Stevenson, The Theory of Moral Sentiments by Adam Smith, and Robot-Proof by Joseph Aoun.
So, go ahead and give (at least) one of these books a read in 2018! And while you’re at it, you should add the following 20 books you really should have read by now to your list, too… 24. Why does the author say “Forget losing weight or saving money”?
A. Because losing weight or saving money is a harder task than reading.
B. Because reading much might cause you to pick up weight or spend more.
C. Because losing weight or saving money has nothing to do with reading books.
D. Because reading books is much more important than losing weight or saving money. 25. Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word “shortcut” in the 2nd paragraph? A. A time-saving way to read books.
B. A lazy person’s way to read books.
C. A quick way to know about endings of books. D. A wise way to deal with too many books to read. 26. What or who has reduced the number of wars throughout history? A. The Paris Peace Pact.
B. The Internationalists.
D. A wide vision of the international scene.
C. Hathaway and Shapiro.
27. What may be written in the next or last paragraph of the passage?
A. More advice on reading books.
B. The main contents of the 20 books recommended. D. The brief introduction of the 20 books recommended.
C. The names of the 20 books recommended.

14. Chinese researchers say they have come up with a simple way to find out a person’s biological age —how much the body has aged physically – through a urine (尿) test.
Their findings will help researchers conduct numbers of ageing studies and even predict a person’s risk of age-related diseases, according to a paper published in the journal Frontiers in Ageing Neuroscience.
Another paper by researchers at the Beijing Hospital and the West China Hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan province, said on Tuesday that people aged at different rates due to changes in their genetic make-up and their environment.
Chronological age – which is based on one’s birth date —was an inaccurate measure of biological age so a more accurate method was needed, the team said.
Ageing is driven by the lifelong gradual accumulation of a broad variety of molecular (分子) faults in the body’s cells. The team said they had identified a matter —8-oxoGsn — that indicated increases in oxidative (氧化性) damage in urine as people’s bodies aged.
Cai Jianping, a co-author at the Beijing Hospital, said: “As we age, we suffer increasing oxidative damage and so the levels of oxidative matters increase in our body.” The team tested the levels of 8-oxoGsn in urine samples from 1,228 Chinese people aged two to 90 and concluded the marker helped accurately determine the stage of biological ageing in adults.
They had previously found that 8-oxoGsn levels also increased with age in the urine of animals such as mice. The team has also developed a rapid analysis technique called ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography, which can process up to 10 urine samples an hour, according to the study.

15. With a flock of birds, a group member can often be seen high in the tree acting as a lookout while the rest feed on the ground below. When a predator approaches, the lookout sounds the alarm.
To the casual observer, it may appear that the lookout is acting for the good of the greater group, but a new study suggests that the lookout – called a sentinel(哨兵) – may actually be working for itself.
While sentinel behavior among groups of birds has been observed, Dr. Roni Ostreiher and Professor Aviad Heifetz recently began researching the sentinel behavior of floaters –birds that have either been cast out or for other reasons decide to go it alone. What they found was that floaters also have similar lookout activities and will sound an alarm call if an enemy approaches.
This suggests that while the group benefits from having a lookout, the instinct to act as the lookout is motivated not by the group but by self-preservation. The sentinel may simply be trying to scare away its enemy instead of warning other birds down below.
It might be easy to understand that when a floater displays sentinel behavior, the bird is acting for itself. However, birds in groups may have less selfish motives since the birds appear to alternate as lookouts. “There are some adult group members who act as sentinels more often than others. As far as we understand, acting as a sentinel is not a duty. Those who sentinel less often are not punished,” Ostreiher said.
He also noted that the sentinel's primary purpose is to gather information about its surroundings – the presence of a neighboring group, changes in food sources and even weather – not keeping lookout for approaching enemies.
“We do not know what motivates them to stop eating and climb up to a tree branch and start to sentinel,” Ostreiher added. He and Heifetz are now focused on understanding what happens after an alarm call is sounded.

16. Though their numbers are growing, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United States are female. The gender gap only grows worse from there: Just 18 percent of American computer-science college degrees go to women. This is in the United States, where many college men proudly describe themselves as “male feminists” and girls are taught they can be anything they want to be. Meanwhile, in Algeria, 41 percent of college graduates in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math—or “stem,”

are female. There, employment discrimination against women is common and women are often pressured to make amends(忍气吞声) with their abusive husbands.
So what explains the tendency for nations that have traditionally less gender equality to have more women in science and technology than their gender-progressive counterparts do? According to a new paper published in Psychological Science by the psychologists Gijsbert Stoet, at Leeds Beckett University, and David Geary, at the University of Missouri, it could have to do with the fact that women in countries with higher gender inequality are simply seeking the clearest possible path to financial freedom. And often, that path leads through stem professions.
The issue doesn’t appear to be girls’ aptitude for stem professions. In looking at test scores across 67 countries and regions, Stoet and Geary found that girls performed about as well or better than boys did on science in most countries, and in almost all countries, girls would have been capable of college-level science and math classes if they had enrolled in them.
But when it comes to their relative strengths, in almost all the countries—all except Romania and Lebanon—boys’ best subject was science, and girls’ was reading. (That is, even if an average girl was as good as an average boy at science, she was still likely to be even better at reading.) Across all countries, 24 percent of girls had science as their best subject, 25 percent of girls’ strength was math, and 51 percent excelled in reading. For boys, the percentages were 38 for science, 42 for math, and 20 for reading. And the more gender-equal the country, as measured by the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index, the larger this gap between boys and girls in having science as their best subject.
What’s more, the countries that minted the most female college graduates in fields like science, engineering, or math were also some of the least gender-equal countries. They assume that this is because the countries that empower women also empower them, indirectly, to pick whatever career they’d enjoy most and be best at.
“Countries with the highest gender equality tend to be welfare states,” they write, “with a high level of social security.” Meanwhile, less gender-equal countries tend to also have less social support for people who, for example, find themselves unemployed. Thus, the authors suggest, girls in those countries might be more inclined to choose stem professions, since they offer a more certain financial future than, say, painting or writing.
When the study authors looked at the “overall life satisfaction” rating of each country—a measure of economic opportunity and hardship—they found that gender-equal countries had more life satisfaction. The life-satisfaction ranking explained 35 percent of the variation between gender equality and women’s participation in stem. That correlation echoes past research showing that the genders are actually more segregated by field of

study in more economically developed places.
The upshot of this research is neither especially feminist nor especially sad: It’s not that gender equality discourages girls from pursuing science. It’s that it allows them not to if they’re not interested.
Then again, it could just be that, feeling financially secure and on equal footing with men, some women will always choose to follow their passions, rather than whatever labor economists recommend. And those passions don’t always lie within science.

18. How did the Universe begin? Many scientists would regard this as one of the most abstract questions of all. But to Stephen Hawking (霍金), who has perhaps come closer than anyone to answering it, the question doesn’t in fact even exist.
Hawking, based at the University of Cambridge, UK, and his colleague Thomas Hertog of the European Laboratory for Particle Physics at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, are about to publish a paper claiming that the Universe had no unique beginning. Instead, they argue, it began in just about every way imaginable.
Out of the varieties of beginnings, the vast majority disappeared without leaving any real mark on the Universe we know today. Only a tiny section of them remained to make the current universe, Hawking and Hertog claim.
That, they insist, is the only possible conclusion if we are to take quantum (量子) physics seriously. “Quantum mechanics (量子力学) forbids a single history,” says Hertog.
The researchers’ theory comes in response to a problem raised by “string theory (弦理论)”, one of the best hopes for a theory of everything. String theory permits innumerable different kinds of universe, most of them very different from the one we live in. Some physicists guess that an unknown factor will turn up the rules out most of these universes.
But Hawking and Hertog say that the countless “alternative worlds” of string theory may actually have existed. We should picture the Universe in the first instants of the Big Bang(宇宙大爆炸) as all these possibilities, they say; like a projection(投射) of billions of movies played on top of one another.
21. Why does the author think the question how the Universe began doesn’t in fact even exist?
A. Because nobody can answer it. B. Because Hawking has claimed that.
C. Because many scientists consider it too abstract.
D. Because the Universe began in every way imaginable without unique beginning.
22. What conclusion about how the Universe began can scientists draw with the help of Quantum mechanics?
A. That the Universe had various histories.
B. That an unknown factor will turn up the rules out most of the Universe.
C. That a tiny section of the varieties of beginnings remained to make the current universe. D. That the Universe experienced the first instants of the Big Bang as all these possibilities.

19. DNA mutations (变异) cause cancer cells to grow out of control, but they also produce the variety that enables organisms (有机体) to adapt to their environments and grow. Until now, biologists have only had immature methods for calculating the average rates and effects of mutations. But in a new study, biophysicists have kept record of unique mutations as they happen in bacterial cells.
These mutations occur at about the same rate over time and only about 1% are deadly, the researchers report today in Science. Moreover, all bacteria in a given strain (菌株) seem to have about the same change rate—about one change per 600 hours in normal bacteria, and about 200 changes per 600 hours in bacteria engineered (转基因的), they note.
To see the mutations, the team built 1000 microscopic channels into a computerlike chip and placed a single bacterial cell at the closed end of each channel. The bacteria carried a DNA repair protein (蛋白) that caused any mutation to shine yellow. Then, for 8 hours up to 3 days, the researchers took a picture every few minutes as new bacterial cells were formed, pushed down the channel, and then swept away by liquid flowing across the ends of these channels. Automated picture processing let them count the number of mutations and calculate how well the cells were doing. Dead cells meant a deadly mutation; slower growing cells meant a harmful mutation.
According to its developers, the technique can be applied to calculate mutation energy in other types of cells, even human cancer cells. And the researchers eventually hope to be able to observe mutation rates in entire

A. To see how they formed. B. To see what they looked like. C. To know better about the mutations. D. To count the number of the mutations. 35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

20. Wings of Rescue, a nonprofit group founded by Yehuda Netanel, hopes to make its 2015 Thanksgiving holiday airlift (空运)its biggest event to date with 25 planes carrying more than 1,000 dogs and 100 cats to new homes around the United States.
“Last year we flew 608 animals,\" Ric Browde, a volunteer of Wings of Rescue said. \"And as soon as the last plane took off, Yehuda told me, ‘Next year we have to go bigger, we have to do 1,000 dogs!’ And I thought, where are we going to get 1,000 dogs? The really sad part is, there are 1,000 dogs that need homes.”
The airlift will use a variety of aircraft. While most pilots involved are seasoned Wings of Rescue volunteers, there will be a couple of pilots making their first rescue flight. “We’re always looking for new pilots that are willing to join the team,” added Browde.
The event will be filmed as part of the All-Star Dog Rescue Celebration to air on the FOX network on Thanksgiving. The two-hour special aims to raise awareness for the eight million animals in the U.S. shelter system. It's being produced by actress Hilary Swank and will feature celebrity guests who will introduce the dogs in need of homes and honor the volunteers who devote their lives to caring for animals in need.
The airlift will cost the group more than $100,000. Browde says, on average, it costs $100 to save one dog – which includes fuel, rental fees for large aircraft and the cost of the health certificate required for each animal to fly.
Every dollar that is contributed goes directly to helping save a pet’s life, and Browde emphasizes that no donation is too small. “We're using money to get the planes in the air and get the dogs where they need to go.”

China’s industrial output is expected to rise by around 6.5 percent this year, marking the best 61 (perform) since 2010, 62 the Made in China 2025 strategy (策略) helps to raise productivity and revenue (税收).
The increase is 0.5 percentage points 63 (high) than the targeted growth, partly 64 (drive) by strong efforts to increase the use of new technology at traditional enterprises (企业), Miao Wei said on Monday.
“The country’s industrial economy has maintained steady and sound growth thanks to the Made in China 2025 strategy. It 65 (promote) the combination of manufacturing and new technologies such as 66 internet, big data and cloud computing,” Miao added.
The ministry also predicted that the country’s industrial output would be likely 67 (grow) by around 6 percent next year, with revenue from the telecommunications, internet, and software and information technology service 68 (increase) by 50 percent, 30 percent and 13 percent, respectively.
According to Miao, the country will also publish policies 69 promoting the development of digital economy. Official 70 (data) show that the country’s digital economy added up to 22.58 trillion yuan last year, ranking second globally and accounting for around 30 percent of national GDP. 【文章大意】“2025中国制造”策略已经并将促进中国在各领域的发展。

69. on考查介词。policy on sth / doing 是固定搭配。
70. data考查名词。此处应该使用名词复数,data 意为“数据”单复数同形。
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ways to teach kindness to kids
There is lots of information about teaching children about kindness. 36 Children may or may not listen to what we say, but they commit just about everything we do to memory - for better or worse. The best thing that we can do for our children is to be our best selves. 37 It means paying attention to little opportunities to treat other people with care and respect.
Here are several suggestions to get you started:
38 Make a habit of tipping servers 20 percent or more. Talk with your child about how servers are often not paid enough to live well. Make a math lesson of figuring out the tip. Model saying please and thank-you, to teach servers are people not robots.
Invite someone who deserves appreciation to dinner - a school crossing guard, a soccer coach, or so on. 39 Have a letter-writing or card-making night, when everyone in the family sends warm wishes to an elderly or sick relative - or strangers who live in a nursing facility in your town.

68
Talk about what makes people tick. 40 When it is over, ask your child what might have been going on. Was the person in a bad mood because his boss yelled at him? Was he impatient because he was worried about a sick friend? Also talk about how the person could have handled the situation better, to teach that it is possible to be kind, even when you are in a bad mood. A. Develop a good habit. B. Tip and talk about it.
C. Discuss how to deal with different people. D. This doesn’t mean turning your life inside out.
E. Have your child help prepare meals and make a thank -you card. F. However, I think that kindness is best taught by example. G. When someone’s behavior makes you angry, breathe deeply.
