The Chinese Food Festival at Our School
Last month, our school had a really cool event all about Chinese food! It was called the Chinese Food Festival and it lasted for a whole week. I was so excited because Chinese food is my absolute favorite.
The festival kicked off on Monday morning with a special assembly. Mr. Wang, our Chinese teacher, gave a presentation about the history and different regional cuisines of China. He showed us pictures of all kinds of delicious dishes like dumplings, noodles, rice, and stir-fries. My mouth was watering just looking at them!
After the assembly, we went back to our classrooms and made Chinese decorations to hang up around the school. I made a paper lantern and colored it bright red. We also learned some new Chinese words related to food and dining.
The real fun started on Tuesday when the food activities began. First up was a Chinese breakfast station in the cafeteria. There were stations set up with chefs making jianbing, which are crispy crepes with eggs and veggies inside. They were so yummy!
We also got to try soybean milk, which kind of tastes like a drink made from beans but is actually really good.
That afternoon, we had a special guest visiting our classroom - a chef from a Chinese restaurant downtown. Chef Liu taught us how to fold dumplings properly. We each got a little circle of dough and a spoon to scoop the filling inside. It was harder than it looks to crimp and shape the dumplings nicely, but I think mine turned out pretty good in the end. We got to eat the dumplings we made for a snack and they were absolutely delicious!
Wednesday was my favorite day because that's when we had the Chinese Food Truck Rodeo on the playground after lunch. There were sooooo many yummy Chinese food trucks set up all around. I got a big steaming bowl of beef noodle soup from the Lanzhou Lamian truck. The broth was so rich and flavorful. I also had to get mango pudding from the dessert truck for a sweet treat.
My friend Dylan's favorite was the jianbing truck that made those stuffed crepes we tried earlier in the week. His had a crispy cracker wrapped around it and was stuffed with eggs, lettuce, chicken, and sauce. Dylan said it was like the best breakfast sandwich ever!
On Thursday, we learned about the importance of tea in Chinese culture by visiting a tea house set up in the library. We each got our own little tea set and the owner taught us the proper way to brew and serve different kinds of tea like oolong, jasmine, and pu'er. We also got to sample lots of different tea snacks like sesame seed balls and egg tarts. So good!
Finally on Friday, the festival ended with a Chinese Culture Show that all the classes prepared for. My class did a short play about the story of Mulan. I was one of the brave soldiers in her army. The fifth graders did a beautiful ribbon dance and some students sang traditional Chinese songs.
At the end, we all got to feast on a huge Chinese banquet prepared by parents. There were tables and tables piled high with dishes like kung pao chicken, mapo tofu, beef and broccoli, and yang chow fried rice. For dessert, there was fresh fruit, almond cookies, and my favorite - mango pudding! I wasn't sure if I would have room after eating so much all week, but I definitely found room for multiple servings of that creamy, sweet goodness.
The Chinese Food Festival was definitely one of the highlights of the whole school year for me. I learned so much about the amazing cuisine and rich culture of China. I can't wait
to go eat at some of the restaurants the food trucks came from. My taste buds had an amazing adventure without even leaving school!
